Summary

In our multicultural world, it is impossible to uphold a standardized conceptualization of ‘normal’. The use of techniques that primarily reinforce competitive sorting is not viable, humanistic, or conceptually valid. This book addresses the immediate and urgent need to both parallel and honor the diversity that typifies our classrooms and communities by promoting ubiquitous assessment, and attending to the individual instructional and therapeutic needs of our students. Ubiquitous Assessment draws attention to the waste that is made of instructional or therapeutic opportunities when assessment is separated from teaching or psychological interventions, and it calls for an immediate, gestalt connection between individuals and their experiences.

Biographical notes

Greg S. Goodman (Author) Karen T. Carey (Author)

The Authors: Greg S. Goodman works as a school psychologist in Clovis, California, and teaches in the Graduate School of Counseling and Special Education at California State University, Fresno. His most recent works include Critical Multicultural Conversations (2004), Reducing Hate Crimes and Violence Among American Youth (Peter Lang, 2002), and Alternatives in Education (Peter Lang, 1999). Karen T. Carey received her Ph.D. in school psychology from the University of Cincinnati. She is currently Chair of the Psychology Department at California State University, Fresno, and Coordinator of the school psychology program. Her most recent books include Critical Multicultural Conversations (with Greg S. Goodman, 2004) and Designing Preschool Interventions: A Practitioner’s Guide (1998).
