    "Visual communication is the process through which individuals in relationships, organizations, and cultures interpret and create visual messages in response to their environment, one another, and social structures. This series seeks to enhance our understanding of visual communication and it explores the role of visual communication in culture. Topics of interest include visual perception and cognition; signs and symbols; typography and image; research on graph ic design, use of visual imagery in education. On a cultural level, research on visual media analysis and critical methods that examine the larger cultural messages imbedded in visual images is welcome. By providing a variety of approaches to the analysis of visual media and messages, this book series is designed to explore issues relating to visual literacy, visual communication, visual rhetoric, visual culture, and any unique method for examining visual communication. "

  • German Visual Culture

    German Visual Culture invites research on German art across different periods, geographical locations, and political contexts. Books in the series engage with aesthetic and ideological continuities as well as ruptures and divergences between individual artists, movements, systems of art education, art institutions, and cultures of display. Challenging scholarship that interrogates and updates existing orthodoxies in the field is desirable. A guiding question of the series is the impact of German art on critical and public spheres, both inside and outside the German-speaking world. Reception is thus conceived in the broadest possible terms, including both the ways in which art has been perceived and defined as well as the ways in which modern and contemporary German artists have undertaken visual dialogues with their predecessors or contemporaries. Issues of cultural transfer, critical race theory and related postcolonial analysis, feminism, queer theory, and other interdisciplinary approaches are encouraged, as are studies on production and consumption, especially the art market, pioneering publishing houses, and the ‘little magazines’ of the avant-garde. All proposals for monographs and edited collections in the history of German visual culture will be considered, although English will be the language of all contributions. Submissions are subject to rigorous peer review. The series will be promoted through the series editor’s Research Forum for German Visual Culture (https://www.eca.ed.ac.uk/research/research-forum-german-visual-culture), which he founded at the University of Edinburgh in 2011, and which has involved various symposia and related publications, all connected to an international network of Germanist scholars.

  • Studies in Twentieth-Century British Literature

    This series invites manuscripts on all genres and authors of twentieth-century British literature. The series seeks to provide fresh critical approaches to the established canon as well as new theoretical constructs which serve to expand the canon, including discourse analysis, narratology, film adaptation of a literary work, and imaging (discovering connections between literary and visual representation of reality). Scholars with cross-disciplinary interests are especially encouraged to submit their work. This series invites manuscripts on all genres and authors of twentieth-century British literature.   • Raffael und seine Zeit / Raphael and His Time

    The new series RAPHAEL AND HIS TIME is focussed on single works or oeuvres in the visual arts realized by Raphael and his workshop. Moreover, works of art by contemporaries can be discussed too. The papers are aiming at the monographic investigation of painting, drawing, and printing basing on the variety of the methodological analysis. Particular stress will be laid on technological analysis, which will be published too. Die Schriftenreihe RAFFAEL UND SEINE ZEIT dient der Veröffentlichung von Untersuchungen zu Einzel- und Gesamtwerken von Raffael und von Künstlern seiner unmittelbaren Nachfolge. Zudem sollen auch Werke anderer Künstler dieser Zeit herangezogen werden können. Die Beiträge betreffen sowohl Arbeiten der Malerei, der Zeichnung sowie der Druckgraphik. Diese neue Reihe ist einer Methodenvielfalt verpflichtet, wobei ein besonderer Akzent auf technologische Analysen gelegt wird. Auch die technischen Untersuchungen werden in angemessener Form veröffentlicht.

    The United States Studies: Culture, Politics, Media Series is addressed to scholars and students from various disciplines with a general interest in multi-, trans-, and interdisciplinary study of the United States and whose research is inspired by diverse approaches to the analysis of cultural, social, and political phenomena as seen from the perspective of broadly understood media, i.e., film, television, press media, new media, visual arts and literature. The Editors of the series welcome original, previously unpublished research from individual scholars as well as edited volumes which exploit a well defined cultural, social, or political aspect of the United States.

  • World Science Fiction Studies

    World Science Fiction Studies understands science fiction to be an inherently global phenomenon. Proposals are invited for monographs and edited collections that celebrate the tremendous reach of a genre that continues to be interpreted and transformed by a variety of cultures and linguistic communities around the world. The series embraces this global vision of the genre but also supports the articulation of each community’s unique approach to the challenges of science, technology and society. The series encourages the use of contemporary theoretical approaches (e.g. postcolonialism, posthumanism, feminisms, ecocriticism) as well as engagement with positionalities understood through critical race and ethnicity studies, gender studies, queer theory, disability studies, class analysis, and beyond. Interdisciplinary work and research on any media (e.g. print, film, television, visual arts, video games, new media) is welcome. The language of the series is English.   • Theaomai – Studien zu den performativen Künsten

    The Old Greek verb theaomai – looking both with the mind’s eye and the actual eye – since the very beginning of European theatre suggests a close relation between theatre and theory. Within the act of perception the spectators, theates, relate the things they hear and see to the site of their memory and psyche. Of all the arts those who reflect the process of perception in the aesthetic form itself are performative arts. This series publishes interdisciplinary studies between theatre- and media studies as well as studies on the visual arts that analyse the social and subjective potential of the aesthetic process of looking, hearing, and reading. Das altgriechische Verb theaomai – «mit dem geistigen wie konkreten Auge schauen» – legt seit den Anfängen des europäischen Theaters eine enge Beziehung von Theater und Theorie nahe. Diese wird vom Zuschauer theates über den Akt seiner Wahrnehmung geknüpft: er verbindet konkretes Hören und Sehen mit dem Schauplatz seines Gedächtnisses und seiner Psyche. Künste, die diesen Prozess des Wahrnehmens in der ästhetischen Form selbst reflektieren, somit Denken und sinnliche Teilnahme des Rezipienten fordern, um die Sinnpotentialitäten des ästhetischen Gegenstands zu realisieren, sind performative Künste. Die Reihe veröffentlicht interdisziplinäre Studien im Übergang von Theater-, Kunst- und Medienwissenschaft, die das gesellschafts- und subjektkritische Potential des Prozesses ästhetischer Zuschauer-, Hörer- oder Leserwahrnehmung untersuchen.
