While the quote above represents the words of one effective teacher, teachers across our nation share the same sentiment when it comes to teaching their students. They are committed to cultivating motivated students that believe in their own capacity to do great things. Their passion and commitment to this goal is reminiscent of the love that a parent has for his/her own child. Among the many factors that have been discussed regarding African American student achievement, teachers are proven to be key factors in student success, regardless of student background or socioeconomic status (Hattie, 2003). Despite the alarmingly low statistics and large achievement gaps, there are African American students who are attaining high levels of achievement.
