· 7 · your actions and beyond The Path to Self-Transformation Layers of Action Planning If you have a good idea about the needs of your practice and have obtained various ideas from others for your practice improvement, the next step is to develop your action plan—what you are actually going to do to improve your practice. To get started on this process, you need to finalize your action research question. This is important because you are developing your action plan according to your finalized research question. In action research, your actions will affect multiple layers of your practice. For example, for you to improve your students’ learning (Layer 1), you need to critically look at your actions in your practice (Layer 2), and be open to transforming your beliefs, values, and assumptions that guide your educational practice (Layer 3), as in the following. (Layer 3) Your students → → (Layer 2) Your teaching → → (Layer 1) You 120 beyond actions An important point here is that your final action research question will look very different depending on which layer you attend to. For example, think of a situation in which your needs assessment revealed that your students have little interest in learning mathematics in your classroom despite your passion for teaching the joy of learning mathematics in your classes.
