8. “There’s no electricity in Cracker Country”: Writing from Experience (Second Grade)

Following a field trip to Cracker Country, Mrs. Perkins discussed the events of the field trip and created a list on the board. She used shared writing to compose a paragraph about the field trip, which also included relevant social studies content. Mrs. Perkins ended her lesson when she encouraged students to write a paragraph on their own.
• Second grade classroom
• Public school (19% minority students, 13% economically disadvantaged)
• Class: 12 males, 13 females; 0 ESL, 6 black, 4 Hispanic, 13 white
• Teacher: White female, 7 years’ teaching experience.
