Paratextual Elements in Translation

This book investigates different elements which have direct implications for translations but are not the actual text. These features are usually presented in a particular format – written, oral, digital, audio-visual or musical. They are furnished with, for example, illustrations, prologues, introductions, indexes or appendices, or are accompanied by an ensemble of information outside the text such as an interview with the author, a general or specialist press review, an advertisement or a previous translation.
However, the boundaries of paratextuality are not limited to the aforementioned examples, since paratextuality has a direct implication for areas as diverse as censorship, a contracting economy, decisions taken by the various actors in the political or cultural context in which the text occurs. Therefore it is obvious that most of the key concepts in Translation Studies cannot be fully understood without reference to the part played by paratextual elements, examined here taking into account different language pairs from Turkish to Catalan.
The content presented in this book is gathered from a conference on Paratextual Elements in Translation, held at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in 2010.

Contributors MIQUEL EDO Hold a PhD from Universitat de Barcelona, Spain. He has also studied at Università di Verona (Italy) and Università di Bologna (Italy). He now lectures Italian language and literature at the Faculty of Translation at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. He has written many articles, prologues, reviews and conference communications related to con- temporary literature. He is an expert in the reception of 19th- and 20th-century Italian writers into Spanish and Catalan: Giosue Carducci, Giovanni Pascoli, Luigi Pirandello, Italo Svevo and Eugenio Montale among others. He is also an acomplished translator of authors such as Vittorio Sereni, Paolo Ruffilli, Guy Allix and Hubert Haddad. From Pirandello, he translated Il fu Mattia Pascal (1998), and published the monograph Luigi Pirandello, Madrid, Síntesis, 2006. After finishing his PhD on Giosue Carducci’s recep- tion, he published a bibliography-anthology Nova bibliografia carducciana, Barcelona, Ixaliæ libri, 2007. He edited two volumes of the critical Edition of the complete Works of the Catalan writer Salvador Espriu: Letizia. Miratge a Citerea. Petites proses blanques. La pluja, 1997, and Fedra. Una altra Fedra, si us plau, 2002. ROCÍO GARCÍA JIMÉNEZ Holds a postgraduate research grant FPU programme [University lecturers’ training pro- gramme] in the Department of Translation and Interpretation at Malaga University, where she has also taught classes in Italian language. She is a member of the research group Traductología e Interculturalidad (Translation and Intercultural Studies).
