Series:

Edited By Andreas Beriger, Stefan Maria Bolli, Widu-Wolfgang Ehlers, Michael Fieger and Wilhelm Tauwinkl

Abstract

The paper analyses more than 150 Romanian translations of Pater noster, trying to observe the lexical choices (nouns and verbs). The conclusion is that the rendering of the nouns is the „conservative“ in the Romanian versions of the prayer, but most of nouns witness significant mobility. As the verbs are concerned, only one verb remains unchanged in the Romania translations of Pater noster. By their choices, some of the translators seem to be versed in the classical languages: e.g. the dual translations in Romanian of the first noun of the prayer (rendered as „Părintele“ and as „Tatăl“) suggests that some interprets were well versed in Greek and/or Latin, giving a subtle translation for other terms of the prayer which can be connected to the „pater“ as head of the household.
