Phraseologie – Fragen der Abgrenzungen und Zugänge

Abstract: Phraseology is a research field that has been constantly expanding and producing new findings, developing new methods of investigation and offering new applications of the results. A review of the progress of studies in phraseology reveals some groundbreaking moments that can be regarded as important impulses or turning-points in the field. The beginnings of phraseology go back to early attempts undertaken by numerous researchers to identify and define terminology in the 17th – 19th centuries. This took the field off the ground. Subsequently advanced by Charles Bally and later by Russian, German and other researchers, modern phraseology finally emerged as an independent research discipline. Particular stages in its development have been marked by the appearance of important study works and monographs. Especially in the last 30–35 years, research in phraseology has been particularly rapid and innovative, and as such it has produced a whole range of significant results. The ever-increasing number of publications, international conferences, websites and other resources related to phraseology has promoted international contacts and collaboration. This, in turn, has enriched research in phraseology with interlingual, intercultural and interdisciplinary aspects which have broadened its scope and introduced new investigative trends, such as pragmatism of phraseology and a cultural-semiotic perspective. The relation between language and culture does not come across as clearly in any other area of language as in phraseology....
