The Axiological Memory

This book represents an attempt to explain the manner in which values are attached to memory. The author examines that when the fundamental values of a civilisation are attached to the individual’s memory, they can never be forgotten or erased, irrespective of how violent or subtle the means used for this purpose might be. The essay investigates why some people who have been educated in a foreign culture and who are, well-integrated, suddenly return to the fundamental values of their culture of origin and, in some cases, they violently turn against their foster civilization.

4 Axiological memory and Weltanschauung

A new table of values was almost always instilled into people’s minds through violent methods, as shown by the suspicious and bloody beginnings of every civilisation. The new man, in all the forms that he appeared until now in the history of humanity, was the product of terror. A Weltanschauung, such as the nationalist-socialist one, is such a method of brutal edification of another axiological memory according to the new man.

1 The fascination and the danger of a Weltanschauung

The German term Weltanschauung remained this way because it cannot be translated into any other language. But, what does Weltanschauung really mean? I shall answer this question in the light of an author who was among the first to have used this term and who is considered, in some writings, the creator of this term, namely Schleiermacher. Like any other word, Weltanschauung does not mean anything. Its meaning is always given by a particular context or by several contexts: linguistic, life related, historical, political, cultural and many others. This is what I intend to do hereinafter; to present a few contexts that give various meanings to this term, which has represented a genuine magical word on many occasions, and also was at the core of many political movements that resulted in millions of human victims.
