Marcadores discursivos.
This volume contains a bilingual introduction and an English summary for every contribution.
Discourse Markers. Portuguese as a contrastive reference brings together a set of studies that analyze discourse markers of European Portuguese in comparison with other languages. The analysis is based on corpora, translations and other relevant linguistic resources. The works included in this volume show the crucial importance of the contrastive perspective in the analysis of discourse markers, for translation, teaching foreign languages and linguistic description in general. The relevance of the book comes from placing Portuguese discourse markers as the center of reflection and contrastive analysis. We highlight the variety of theoretical points of view, of discourses in which the markers are analyzed, of languages whose markers are compared with those of European Portuguese.
Discourse Markers in Patient Information Leaflets: a Contrastive Analysis between German and European Portuguese (Joana Guimarães)
Abstract: With the ultimate goal of defending consumers’ interests and giving continuity to the work already carried out on the comprehensibility of instructive texts (Guimarães, 2013), this study focuses on the analysis of the contribution of discourse markers (DM) to the comprehensibility1 of the information leaflets of a set of medicines both in European Portuguese and in German, in accordance with the Karlsruhe comprehensibility model (Göpferich, 2009). In addition to verifying the frequency of use of different types of DM in both languages, the article analyses their role in guiding readers’ expectations and facilitating their work in structuring the information they need to assimilate2. As this textual genre is so strongly regulated, both at national and international level3, it has been found that the textual producer/translator has considerable scope/margin to reinforce textual cohesion through the conscious and systematic use of DMs, and at the same time to improve its comprehensibility and to optimize the reader’s motivation for reading it.

Continuing the work already undertaken on the comprehensibility of instructive texts (Guimarães, 2013), this study focuses on the contribution of discourse markers (DMs) to the comprehensibility of information leaflets of a set of medicines in Portuguese and German, based on the Karlsruhe comprehensibility model developed by Göpferich (2009). After a brief presentation of this model, I will attempt the definition of what I consider to be a discourse marker4,...
