Il discorso sulle migrazioni / Der Migrationsdiskurs

Approcci linguistici, comparativi e interdisciplinari / Sprachwissenschaftliche, vergleichende und interdisziplinäre Perspektiven

Edited By Daniela Pietrini

Migration in Translation: an ethnological study of terms and words at the European Parliament

Abstract: The core of Migration in Translation – a four-year research project conducted between the University of Verona and the European Parliament – has been to investigate the role played by terminology and translation in shaping the migration crisis in EU Institutions. The present study is extracted by this broad research and investigates how terms in the domain of migration have been used in institutional texts from 1950 to 2016 in English and Italian. As Schäffner (2004, 120) explains, “it is through translation that information is made available to addresses beyond national borders”. In the case of the European Union, translation follows a “European to national” approach, as it is used by EU Institutions to communicate with Member States and EU citizens. In the present study, 54 terms in the domain of migration, their occurrences and patterns of use were investigated in the EURLEX Corpus 2/16; the parallel corpora function was used to observe term equivalents in English and Italian. How are terms chosen in EU texts and how have these factors affected the representation of migrants and refugees in EU texts over time? The present study unveils how perceptions of migrants and refugees have changed in the European Institutions from 1950 to 2016 through the lens of terminology and reflects on their representation in...
