The book focuses on the cities and urban policy systems analysed in the strategic (long-term) perspective. Due to this unique perspective, the book enables the multifactorial analysis of the conditions and mechanisms of creating the urban policy system in the Visegrad Group states and Ukraine. Undoubtedly, there is a lack of studies presenting the strategic approach to creating urban policy system discussed in the broad context of the transformations of the modern democratic state and, what is connected with it, through the prism of the processes of decentralization, Europeanization and regionalization. The monograph, in the intention of the editor and the team of authors, is to fill this undeniable gap.

Yevgeniy Borodin – PhD in History, First Deputy Director and Professor at the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Institute for Public Administration of the National Academy for Public Administration under the President of Ukraine. Borodin wrote many scientific publications in the field of the development of local self-government system in Ukraine, strategic management, the management of the social and humanitarian sphere in the process of voluntary uniting of territorial communities, and defining the powers of the district council in the city as a problem of local self-government in Ukraine. He is an expert on the development of local self-government system, the state youth policy and the formation of the state youth policy in Ukraine. In 2015, he was a national youth policy expert for United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). Moreover Borodin, has a rich and documented experience in this sphere as a practicioner: an NGOs’ activist and a public official in Ukrainian institutions and bodies.

Richard Brix – PhD in Political Science, Assistant Professor at the Department of Public Administration, the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Saint Cyril and Methodius in Trnava (Slovakia). During his doctoral work, Brix focused primarily on the issues of self-government, especially on small municipalities. He was an active participant of several domestic and foreign conferences, e.g. the 23rd IPSA World Congress of Political Science in Montréal (Canada), the 25th IPSA World Congress of Political Science in Brisbane (Australia) and various other conferences in the USA. As a part of his scientific and research activities, he wrote several articles not only on the issue of small municipalities but also in the areas of participation at the local level and state administration. He teaches several subjects in the field of self-government, small municipalities, and political geography.

Ladislav Cabada – PhD in Political Science, Associate Professor and the creator of Political Science study programmes – MA and PhD level – at the Department of Political Science and Humanities of Metropolitan University Prague in the Czech Republic. Previously, he studied Political Science at the Charles University in Prague. During his doctoral studies, he spent one academic year at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. He was the President of Czech Association for Political Science (2006–2012) and the President of Central European Political Science Association (2012–2018). Currently, Cabada holds a position as an Editor in Chief of Politics in Central Europe. He specializes in the comparative politics of East-Central Europe, mainly in the party systems and political actors, and the analysis ←9 | 10→of selected East-Central European countries policies and the regional studies of Central and South-Eastern Europe.
