Peter Lang Young Scholars Award 2015

For more than 40 years, Frankfurt Peter Lang GmbH has been striving to ensure the best possible distribution of academic publications. The publishing programme is internationally oriented and one of the largest of its kind in the fields of humanities and social sciences, as well as in law and economics.

The Award

Peter Lang would like to offer young researchers the opportunity to publish their findings in its programme. But funding a publication is not always easy, especially for young scholars.

Which is why the Peter Lang Young Scholars Award has been set up. Award-winning works will be published free of charge – in both hard copy and e-Book formats.

The award will recognise outstanding monographs. Applications will be accepted from young scholars in Germany, Austria, and Scandinavia, as well as Poland and Turkey.

In 2015, the award will be given in four fields (humanities, social sciences, law and economics). Two works from each field will receive the award.

Applications can be submitted, starting immediately and up to 15 November 2015. Peter Lang Verlag will select the winners of the award who will be notified by 15 December 2015 at the latest and announced on the company’s website.

Applications should contain the following documents, compiled into a single PDF file:

1. Exposé (up to 1,800 characters)

4. Information detailing the status of the work and completion date

Aikat and Tan Recipients of Book Contracts in Inaugural AEJMC-Peter Lang Scholarsourcing Series

The first two books to be published in the new AEJMC-Peter Lang Scholarsourcing Series will be authored by Debashis “Deb” Aikat of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and Alexis Tan of Washington State University.

Their winning proposals were chosen through a unique “Scholarsourcing” process that kicked off in September 2014. Drawing on the idea of crowdsourcing, the innovative initiative enabled AEJMC members to review abbreviated and anonymized book proposals, and to indicate which ones they felt were most promising. Twenty-six proposals were received in this first year, and dozens of AEJMC members participated in the selection process.

Aikat’s book, Who’s a Journalist? News in the Digital Age, will draw on original research to explore the evolving roles of journalists and journalism. Tan’s book, Global Mass Communication and Journalism Research, will also rely on original research to outline the scope of contemporary journalism research worldwide and to highlight opportunities for cross-cultural collaboration. Both Aikat and Tan are long-time members of AEJMC and have held multiple leadership roles within the organization. Tan is a past president, and Aikat is incoming chair of the Professional Freedom & Responsibility Standing Committee. Both authors will be recognized at the AEJMC business meeting in San Francisco.

Their books will be jointly published by Peter Lang and AEJMC, representing the association’s first entry into academic book publishing. Peter Lang Publishing Group is an international scholarly press with offices in the United States and throughout Europe.

The Scholarsourcing initiative is the brainchild of Peter Lang Senior Acquisitions Editor Mary Savigar and AEJMC Past President Paula Poindexter. After AEJMC members read and ranked the abbreviated proposals, Savigar invited authors receiving the highest ratings to submit more extensive proposals. Those were then reviewed by a five-person editorial committee that includes Poindexter as well as Carolyn Bronstein (DePaul), David Perlmutter (Texas Tech) and Richard Waters (San Francisco). Jane Singer (City University London) serves as committee chair and series editor.

“This has proved to be a wonderfully creative idea with a fantastic outcome,” Singer said. “We received lots of interesting proposals, and AEJMC members took it from there. The committee then had the enjoyable task of following the membership’s lead to select the best of the best. Our first contracts will go to two quite different but highly promising books, nicely showcasing the range of ideas this initiative can encompass. Congratulations to our winning authors!”

“We went into this without a good sense of how many proposals would be submitted or how many members would be willing to participate in the review process,” Savigar said. “The outcome has far exceeded my expectations, and I’m thrilled that the membership has responded so enthusiastically to the initiative. The publishing industry is experiencing unprecedented change, so I believe it is important for academic publishers to address this by creatively re-thinking how scholarly books are proposed, peer-reviewed, and approved for contract.

Thank you to all of the authors and members who participated this year.” Entries will open for the second year
of the AEJMC-Peter Lang Scholarsourcing initiative on September 1, 2015, with a closing date
of October 15, 2015, for submission of abbreviated proposals.
