Summary

Urban streets, rubbish bins, the desert and private industry are all examples of what might be termed ‘pedagogical peripheries,’ which, over time, tie into and contribute to the making of school and schooling. As peripheries they might easily be overlooked and their role neglected. However, rather than treating these pedagogical peripheries, which can be both fleeting and highly concrete, as mere background, this book conceptualises them as part of a school that is seen as a dynamic meshwork of interconnected actors, ideas, materials and practices. The chapters reveal how the peripheries of school and schooling are constantly shifting, sometimes stabilising and sometimes challenging existing structures. By focusing on what happens on the sidelines, the book shows how seemingly marginal aspects are intrinsically interwoven with daily routines and educational processes. The result is a more complex understanding of how schools are formed, experienced, and changed.
