©2025 Monographs 112 Pages
Series: Spectrum Slovakia, Volume 50

Summary

The book examines the electoral processes that took place at the regional level in the Slovak Republic between 2001 and 2022. It focuses on the elections to the Regional Assemblies and elections of Župans, which reflect the legislative conditions for holding elections in the regions, the structure of regional self-government, and the course of regional elections. The book highlights the main electoral cleavages that emerged from the results of the most recent regional elections in 2022. These are 1. Slovak politics vs. Hungarian minority, 2. Party vs. independent deputies, and 3. Political and geographical fragmentation on the regional level.

Introduction

The enhancement of regional institutions was a primary focus for the Slovak authorities prior to its accession to the EU. This included the transfer of authority from the central government to regional bodies, facilitating the political empowerment of newly established regional authorities such as Regional Assemblies and Župans. The initiation of electoral processes at the regional level in 2001 led to a significant fragmentation of the regions within the Slovak Republic. Varying support for different political parties/ electoral coalitions or candidates for the post of Župan is indicative of the diverse ideologies held by Slovak voters. The capital region, western regions, north, centre, and east of the country frequently demonstrated differing preferences in the election of regional authorities. This diversity was evident in the support for more conservative or liberal politicians, pro-European forces or Eurosceptic parties, as well as pro-government or opposition candidates for the post of Župan.
