Chan Cheong Jan received a Ph.D. in Literature in musicology from Osaka University under the supervision of the late Osamu Yamaguti in 2002. He has conducted fieldwork in rural Malay villagers and has served as a lecturer in the Music Department, Faculty of Human Ecology, Universiti Putra Malaysia for 25 years. Chan is now a professor of cross-cultural studies at the Center for International Affairs, Tottori University, Japan. Email: chanupm@gmail.com
