Zusammenfassung

There have been many editions and translations of La Fille du Comte de Ponthieu going as far back as 1923 (Clovis Brunel). It has survived in two manuscripts from the thirteenth-century and in one fifteenth-century manuscript. For the first time, Catherine Croizy-Naquet has made an extensive effort to edit all three versions accompanied by a modern French translation. That means, however, for the early version, that she relies on BnF fr. 770 as a her base manuscript, while ms. BnF fr. 12203 serves as a reference in the apparatus which lists significant variations. The second version is based on BnF fr. 12572, and in the apparatus, she has consulted the manuscript Arsenal 5208. To ease the reading today, she has distinguished the letters i and j, and n and u according to their sound values. A number of textual abbreviations have been written out, which is all in conformity with the current standards of editing medieval texts (other details are listed but do not need to be repeated here). The modern French translation stays as close to the original as possible and does not try to present the text according to modern aesthetics. Even numerous word duplications, very typical for the late version, are kept so as not to intervene in the text inappropriately. The extensive bibliography confirms that Croizy-Naquet has researched this topic as thoroughly as possible, but it is a little difficult to trace specific titles since she has grouped the studies in a number of different categories. A long glossary at the end serves exceedingly well to help future readers go through the original texts more easily.
