Der Stricker’s Der Pfaffe Amîs is relatively unknown among many native English-speaking academics who may not be familiar with mittelhochdeutsche Sprache. Thus, translating this significant work into modern English is an important enterprise, for which Classen, as author of well over 130 books as well as a number of fine translations into English of medieval German texts, is especially well-prepared. This translation is well-done, reads smoothly, and offers Anglo-American academics a significant, accurate, and understandable text from the German Middle Ages.
