This slim volume, produced in honor of the medieval Latinist Ferruccio Bertini (1941–2012; the dates of his life are not given, and there is also no clear biography or bibliography), is dedicated to the topic of medieval gender relationships, certainly a valid issue that is here viewed through a variety of perspectives. There are six articles by various scholars, then two reprints of Bertini’s articles (one on the role of women in medieval Latin literature and one on the role of the Virgin Mary in Hrotsvit of Gandersheim’s works), an index of author names and work titles, and an index of scholars. Paolo Gatti offers a brief introduction, highlighting some of Bertini’s scholarly foci, but it all remains much too vague; this is not the best way to pay respect to this highly regarded scholars.
