Summary

This impressively hefty tome puts us on a fascinating and fearsome journey through an expansive, heavily wooded and foggily obscured landscape. Like similar guides, it invites readers to cut their own paths through the contents, to pick through the individual offerings to glean directions and details, in this instance about travelers and travel writers, types of travels and destinations, and the nature of travel writing about distant people and places. It will benefit experts and students, although, despite its intended purpose, I do not recommend using it to take day trips and detours, since these might lead readers astray. Instead, follow the entire arduous path from beginning to end to gain the greatest rewards from the deep reading that the rich contents deserve.
