Summary

These four volumes make up the tenth series of the Œuvres de Saint Augustin published by the Institut d’Études Augustiniennes, covering sermons discovered or significantly reconstituted from previous partial versions by François Dolbeau. In 1990, Dolbeau famously identified twenty-six of Augustine’s sermons, which were either completely unknown or included material unknown in the extant medieval abbreviations of them, in Mainz Stadtbibliothek Codex I.9. (F. Dolbeau Vingt-six sermons au peuple d’Afrique, Institut d’Études Augustiniennes, 1996) This discovery stood as among the most important of the last century of Augustinian studies. These Mainz sermons (Dolbeau 2–27) are partially attested in two previous collections: thirteen of them from the Abbey of Lorsch (Dolbeau 2–7, 21–27), and thirteen from the Carthusian monastery Grande Chartreuse (Dolbeau 8–20). In addition to these sermons, six (Dolbeau 1, 28–32) are published here as sermons extravagants, which have been pieced together individually rather than as a set from Mainz or elsewhere.
