Summary

Admonitioandcorrectiowere the guiding principles of the ninth-century Carolingian reforms of religious life in northern Europe. Freighted with moral language, the provisions of royal capitularies issued by Charlemagne and his successors laid the foundation for a reform of morals communicated through sermons in the parishes and religious communities of the Frankish heartlands. To this end, ninth-century preachers quarried late antique and early medievalsermons to provide raw materials for new homiletic compositions tailored to the reforming agenda of the Carolingians.
