Ancient Reflections on Vanity, Contempt of the World, Misery, and Dignity of Man

This book reflects on the foundations of both “contempt of the world” and the human “misery” and “dignity.” Drawing on Augustinian categories, Domański reconstructs their intellectual foundations – not because Augustine directly inspired the medieval and later thinkers who explored these themes but because his Christian and Neoplatonic anthropology offers an unparalleled ontological and axiological framework for understanding them. While medieval authors often found their immediate models among other Christian writers or ancient philosophers and poets, it is the Augustinian hierarchy of values that allows their reflections on human misery and dignity to acquire full philosophical coherence. Through this lens, Domański illuminates the spiritual and metaphysical architecture behind some of Western thought’s most persistent moral ideas.
