Summary

Throughout my tenure as Director of the UK Council for Graduate Education, addressing harassment and sexual misconduct has been an ongoing concern. This book – building on earlier work that we were proud to support – needs to be required reading for anyone concerned with improving doctoral education internationally.
- Owen Gower, Director, UK Council for Graduate Education
This book is an enormously helpful resource in planning and executing a programme of work to address harassment and sexual misconduct.
As an academic working on doctoral education, I appreciate its research-informed approach, and as a Dean responsible for doctoral students, its detailed, practical approach guides the way to implementation.
- Paul Wakeling, Dean of the York Graduate Research School, University of York, UK
Higher education institutes (HEIs) are increasingly being recognised in legislation and national policies as key actors in addressing harassment and gender-based violence (GBV). However, postgraduate students, particularly doctoral candidates, have received far less attention than undergraduates in relation to preventing and responding to harassment and GBV. Doctoral students face different risks from other students or staff in HE. As such, prevention and response strategies need to take into account their distinctive status within HEIs.
This book is designed to support and inform everyone working to address harassment and GBV in doctoral education. Providing practical, research-informed guidance and examples of good practice from HEIs worldwide, it aims to promote safer, more equitable environments for doctoral students globally.
