Academic and scholarly responses have built on the traditional and non-traditional analytical frameworks and promoted a multidimensional discourse on, for example, conflict management, peace and security systems, HIV/AIDS, democratic governance, and the implications of globalization. This series is designed to encourage innovative thinking on a broad range of development issues. Thus its remit extends to all fields of intellectual inquiry with the aim of highlighting the advantages of a synergistic interdisciplinary perspective on the challenges of and opportunities for development in the continent. Of particular interest are studies with a heavy empirical content which also have a bearing on policy debates and those that question theoretical orthodoxies while being grounded on concrete developmental concerns. Urban development is a key to designing the socio-spatial future of human societies. The book series pursues an interdisciplinary approach towards a wide array of public tasks: from urban design to the supply of local facilities and infrastructure, urban governance and the relationship between state and non-state actors. Urban development is also the arena in which visions about community life and its practical implementation meet. The series focuses on representing overarching topics. While the number of publications on special issues grows exponentially, they often seem to lack contextualization. It is the purpose of this series to close that gap. Besides a specifically German viewpoint, its publications bring international research results into play. The series was earlier published under: Beiträge zur kommunalen und regionalen Planung. Stadtentwicklung ist ein Schlüsselbereich für die Zukunftsgestaltung menschlicher Gesellschaften. Die Buchreihe möchte den Blick aus interdisziplinären Perspektiven auf ein breites Feld öffentlicher Aufgaben richten: vom Städtebau über technische und soziale Infrastrukturen bis zur politischen Steuerung eines Gemeinwesens durch Institutionen und Initiativen. "In the "Institutional and Socio-Economics" book series, the economy is studied as a genuinely social system of heterogeneous agents in an institutional context. The series includes a broad range of different methodological approaches, theoretical perspectives and subjects of study. Interdependencies among agents in complex social systems can be studied using evolutionary economic models, as well as institutional economic and simulation studies. Hence, the focus is being laid on approaches that are more explorative than the standard equilibrium analysis; on approaches that allow for complexity; on approaches that consider development, history, institutions, and values. Thus, we may conclude that institutions are more than just devices for the reduction of transaction costs. From an institutionalist perspective, institutions are the common and collective solutions to social decision problems, particularly social dilemma problems, coordination problems, and collective-good problems. Such solutions require ‘recognized interdependence’ and learned coordination and cooperation, thus a learned culture of a long-run perspective – emerging as the result of a process of interactions. Institutions often are transitory only, part of the ongoing dynamics, adequately modeled possibly as an evolutionary process. Also, they may be instrumental solutions to a social decision problem at first and may degenerate into ceremonial power-and-status-based phenomena later, thus limiting the possibility of further innovation and development. In a genealogy of economics, the thematic and methodological spectrum of this book series would embrace the history of thought beginning with the classics including great names such as Adam Smith and Karl Marx but also the late classics who already have struggled with issues like complexity, process, historical time, and evolution. In newer times, the spectrum continues with Veblenian, Keynesian, and Post-Keynesian thinking; it would also include works in the traditions of original institutionalist economics, ecological economics, Neo-Schumpeterian thinking, evolutionary economics, and game theory. Social economics and social policy analysis, behavioral economics, complex modeling, system dynamics, and agent-based computational economics would be embraced as well. Such lists, however, can never be exhaustive. Last not least, institutional and socio-economics deals with the epistemology and substance of values, norms and ethics, value warrants of economic behavior as well as the normative foundations of economics. This series, thus, stands in the best traditions of plural economic research areas and pluralistic theoretical perspectives. At a time when German Studies faces a serious challenge to its identity and position in the European and international context, this new series aims to reflect the increasing importance of both culture (in the widest sense) and linguistics to the study of German in Britain and Ireland. GLCS will publish monographs and collections of essays of a high scholarly standard which deal with German in its socio-cultural context, in multilingual and multicultural settings, in its European and international context and with its use in the media. The series will also explore the impact on German society of particular ideas, movements and economic trends and will discuss curriculum provision and development in universities in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. Language Testing and Evaluation

Aims and Scope The aim of this series is to provide a forum for publishing theoretical and empirical research of a high standard in all areas of language testing and evaluation. Our focus is on research into language tests and assessment tools as well as on programme evaluation in which emphasis is placed on the characteristics of the instruments themselves. It is our intention to enhance the possibilities for international scholarly debate among experts as well as to make research findings and new developments known to practitioners and the interested public worldwide. We welcome contributions in English, German or French. Media production and media aesthetics are corresponding aspects of the discussion surrounding media that form a single unit. The series focuses partly on works about the aesthetic-dialectic analysis of media design. Areas of interest include media technology development and the resulting changes in both media design and what is expected of media. At the same time, digital and online media are influencing usage to a large extent. Authors in this series address these impacts and examine the extent to which changed forms of use are encouraging the development of new technologies and applications. By linking these interacting areas, we want this series to encourage and promote discussion between the disciplines. The volumes 1–4 have been published under "Babelsberger Schriften zu Mediendramaturgie und -Ästhetik". Medienästhetik und Mediennutzung bilden als korrespondierende Aspekte des Diskurses über Medien eine Einheit. Im Fokus der Schriftenreihe stehen zum einen Arbeiten, in denen sich Autor_innen der ästhetisch-dialektischen Analyse der Gestaltung medialer Werke zuwenden. Fokussiert werden die Entwicklungen der Medientechnik und die sich daraus ergebenden Veränderungen in der Gestaltung und in den Erwartungen an Medien. Zum anderen nehmen digitale und Online-Medien einen großen Einfluss auf die Nutzung ein. Autor_innen der Reihe widmen sich diesen Auswirkungen sowie der Untersuchung dessen, inwiefern veränderte Gebrauchsformen die Entwicklung neuer Technologien und Anwendungen anstoßen. The book series "Religionswissenschaft / Studies in Comparative Religion" publishes studies in Religions of Asia in history and the present, either as monographs or edited volumes. Topics to be dealt with in the series cover local traditions and developments both of "world religions" and minority religions, geographically focussing on South, Southeast and Western Asia. Also studies in theory and methods of religion are welcome. The book series publishes books in German, English or French. The series was discontinued in December 2022. Die Reihe "Religionswissenschaft / Studies in Comparative Religion" bietet innerhalb des Gebiets der Religionswissenschaft ein Forum für die Veröffentlichung von Studien zu Religionen Asiens. Canadiana

The collection will offer a platform for the presentation of research-works in Canadian Studies, a discipline of increasing interest. New developments in the Studies of Literature, Culture and Media shall be documented in the new collection. The specific character of Canadianess creates a major interest for intercultural, multicultural and transcultural aspects. This fact will have an impact not only on the basic research fields, but also on epistemological dimensions. In this collection, research works to Canadian issues will be published in German, English or French, with abstracts in the other two languages. The series Sources and Studies in Music History from Antiquity to the Present treats a wide range of musicological subjects from antiquity to the present day. There are editions of unknown or forgotten musical sources, biographies of composers, monographs, collections of articles and lectures. Its intention is to promote the dialogue between historical, comparative, and interdisciplinary studies, including recent developments in musicology and musical theory. Die Reihe Quellen und Studien zur Musikgeschichte von der Antike bis in die Gegenwart beschäftigt sich mit einer großen Bandbreite von musikwissenschaftlichen Themen von der Antike bis in die neueste Zeit. Hier erscheinen Quelleneditionen unbekannter oder vergessener Musikwerke, Komponistenbiographien und Monographien sowie Schriften und Vorträge. Die Reihe nimmt aber auch epochenübergreifende und interdisziplinäre Entwicklungen zum Anlass für vergleichende Studien. Ebenso werden aktuelle Entwicklungen der Musikwissenschaft und Musiktheorie als Forschungsfeld aufgegriffen.

Studies on Themes and Motifs in Literature

The series is designed to advance the publication of research pertaining to themes and motifs in literature. The studies cover cross-cultural patterns as well as the entire range of national literatures. They trace the development and use of themes and motifs over extended periods, elucidate the significance of specific themes or motifs for the formation of period styles, and analyze the unique structural function of themes and motifs. By examining themes or motifs in the work of an author or period, the studies point to the impulses authors received from literary tradition, the choices made, and the creative transformation of the cultural heritage. The series will include publications of colloquia and theoretical studies that contribute to a greater understanding of literature.

German Life and Civilization contributes to a critical understanding of Central European cultural history from medieval times to the present. Culture is here defined in the broadest sense, comprising expressions and representations in literature, music, performative and pictorial arts, and media, as well as political and sociohistorical developments in the texture of everyday life. Building on its strengths in GDR scholarship and political literature, the series also seeks to explore newer thematic trends such as human entanglements with the environment and natural world, and transnational and minority communities. The series aims to foster progressive and inclusive scholarship that aspires to a synthetic view of culture by crossing traditional disciplinary boundaries. As indicated by its name, this series is devoted to the interpretation of ancient Greek and Latin texts. It accommodates not only studies of special subjects and individual authors, but also annotated editions as well as commentaries. In the tradition of critical scholarship the collection is uncompromisingly philological without however excluding new approaches and methods of exegesis. Each of the volumes represents independent and original research which contributes to the understanding of ancient texts whether in the form of critical exposition or the investigation of specific problems. It is in this sense that they genuinely further the discipline of classical philology. At the same time the series welcomes studies of the reception and influence of ancient texts including in particular the history of their transmission as well as the historical development of philology in its various aspects. In order to reach as wide a readership as possible, publication is restricted to works written in those languages most commonly in use in classical scholarship. Special importance is attached to clear presentation and a choice of language that can be readily understood. Authors are moreover encouraged to provide translations wherever they would aid comprehension. Ultimately Sapheneia should not only advance classical studies,but also deepen our understanding of the intellectual tradition of the western world. La tradition de l’analyse critique nous oblige à concevoir son contenu comme une démarche philologique rigoureuse. Ceci ne saurait exclure cependant ni l’exploration de voies nouvelles, ni un élargissement des méthodes d’interprétation des textes. Les volumes de cette collection doivent relever d’une recherche indépendante, tant du point de vue de leur exégèse que de celui de l’approche analytique. En ce sens, elle offre un apport original à la philologie classique. Une grande importance y est donnée à la continuité et à l’actualité de la lecture des textes antiques, particulièrement dans les domaines de l’histoire de la transmission, de l’interprétation ainsi que de l’historique de la discipline philologique. This series focuses on encounters, conflicts and transformations from the 15th century to the present and beyond. It invites works from various disciplines of the social sciences and humanities that consider the adoption, development, or reconceptualization of basic social and cultural phenomena in the Middle East, as broadly conceived, at any time from the fifteenth century to the present, particularly in consideration of future implications. Cette collection vise à approfondir la réflexion sur les rencontres, les conflits et les transformations qui ont eu lieu au Moyen-Orient à partir du XVème siècle jusqu’au présent et même au-delà. Elle souhaite recevoir des propositions venant des sciences sociales et humaines prenant en consideration l’adoption, le développement ou la réélaboration de phénomènes sociaux et culturels fondamentaux dans l’aire du Moyen-Orient, conçu dans son acception la plus large, à n’importe quel moment de l’histoire entre le XVème siècle et l’âge contemporain avec une attention particulière à leurs futures implications.

Historical Sociolinguistics

The interdisciplinary field of Historical Sociolinguistics seeks to reveal the impact of language development on society and the role of individuals and society in the changing forms and usage of language. This book series is aimed at sociolinguists and social historians who are keen to publish studies on the social history of languages, the interaction of linguistic practices and society, and the sociological significance of linguistic variation with a historical dimension. The purpose of the series is to provide empirically supported studies that will challenge and advance current language historiographies, which often continue to present the history of particular languages as necessarily leading to the creation of a standard or prestige variety. Of particular interest are topics such as the following: language myths and language ideology, historical multilingualism and the formation of nation-states, the sociolinguistics of minority and regional languages, the rise of urban vernaculars, immigrants and their languages, the role of prescriptive grammarians, and the social history of pidgins and creoles. Book proposals from historians and linguists working on any language in any period are welcome, in particular those that include a comparative dimension as well as those with a strong empirical foundation. The language of publication is primarily English, though other languages may be considered. The editors guarantee that all publications in this series have been submitted to external and anonymous peer review. These "Studies" explore the periodical in its many forms, dating back to the beginning of printing. In addition to magazines and newspapers, we investigate broadsheets, folk calendars, almanacs, and other forms of the periodical. In this international and interdisciplinary series, local, regional, national and trans-European communication spaces and forms are also examined. The series considers historical developments (of a specific genre or an ensemble of several periodicals, etc.) and offers synchronous investigations into the media and communications of a given period. The "Studies" aim to contribute to the understanding of the emergence, establishment and diversification of the European print media reception and literary and media formats and techniques. Die „Studien" erforschen die vielfältigen Formen der periodisch publizierten Kommunikation seit Beginn des Buchdrucks. Neben Zeitschriften, Magazinen oder Zeitungen gehören hierzu auch ältere Formen wie Flugblätter, Volkskalender, Almanache etc. In der internationalen und interdisziplinären Reihe werden lokale, regionale, nationale oder transeuropäische Kommunikationsräume und -formen untersucht. Sie interessiert sich für historische Entwicklungen (einer spezifischen Gattung oder eines Ensembles mehrerer Periodika etc.) und bietet synchrone Untersuchungen zur medialen Kommunikation einer Epoche. Damit leisten die Studien einen Beitrag zur Erforschung der Entstehung, Etablierung und Diversifizierung der europäischen Printmedienrezeption sowie medialer und literarischer Formate und Techniken.
