These "Studies" explore the periodical in its many forms, dating back to the beginning of printing. In addition to magazines and newspapers, we investigate broadsheets, folk calendars, almanacs, and other forms of the periodical. In this international and interdisciplinary series, local, regional, national and trans-European communication spaces and forms are also examined. The series considers historical developments (of a specific genre or an ensemble of several periodicals, etc.) and offers synchronous investigations into the media and communications of a given period. The "Studies" aim to contribute to the understanding of the emergence, establishment and diversification of the European print media reception and literary and media formats and techniques. Die „Studien" erforschen die vielfältigen Formen der periodisch publizierten Kommunikation seit Beginn des Buchdrucks. Neben Zeitschriften, Magazinen oder Zeitungen gehören hierzu auch ältere Formen wie Flugblätter, Volkskalender, Almanache etc. In der internationalen und interdisziplinären Reihe werden lokale, regionale, nationale oder transeuropäische Kommunikationsräume und -formen untersucht. Sie interessiert sich für historische Entwicklungen (einer spezifischen Gattung oder eines Ensembles mehrerer Periodika etc.) und bietet synchrone Untersuchungen zur medialen Kommunikation einer Epoche. Damit leisten die Studien einen Beitrag zur Erforschung der Entstehung, Etablierung und Diversifizierung der europäischen Printmedienrezeption sowie medialer und literarischer Formate und Techniken.

Lang Classical Studies

Lang Classical Studies includes topics in the history, literature, and culture of the ancient Greek and Roman world. Monographs that challenge currently accepted views or mark out new areas of investigation are especially welcome. Comparative studies that combine various aspects of religion, intellectual history, reception studies, political theory, archaeology, ancient medicine, and the history of science fall within the scope of this series whenever they address the larger concerns of modern Classical scholarship. Contributors to this series, however, need not feel they are confined to currently fashionable topics or approaches. As indicated by its name, this series is devoted to the interpretation of ancient Greek and Latin texts. It accommodates not only studies of special subjects and individual authors, but also annotated editions as well as commentaries. In the tradition of critical scholarship the collection is uncompromisingly philological without however excluding new approaches and methods of exegesis. Each of the volumes represents independent and original research which contributes to the understanding of ancient texts whether in the form of critical exposition or the investigation of specific problems. It is in this sense that they genuinely further the discipline of classical philology. At the same time the series welcomes studies of the reception and influence of ancient texts including in particular the history of their transmission as well as the historical development of philology in its various aspects. In order to reach as wide a readership as possible, publication is restricted to works written in those languages most commonly in use in classical scholarship. Special importance is attached to clear presentation and a choice of language that can be readily understood. Authors are moreover encouraged to provide translations wherever they would aid comprehension. Ultimately Sapheneia should not only advance classical studies,but also deepen our understanding of the intellectual tradition of the western world. As of volume 24, the series is no longer published by Peter Lang Verlag. Comme l’indique son nom, cette collection est consacrée à l’interprétation de textes anciens, grecs et latins. Elle offre un cadre à des monographies consacrées à un sujet ou à un auteur spécifique, mais aussi à des commentaires ou à des éditions annotées. La tradition de l’analyse critique nous oblige à concevoir son contenu comme une démarche philologique rigoureuse. Ceci ne saurait exclure cependant ni l’exploration de voies nouvelles, ni un élargissement des méthodes d’interprétation des textes. Les volumes de cette collection doivent relever d’une recherche indépendante, tant du point de vue de leur exégèse que de celui de l’approche analytique. En ce sens, elle offre un apport original à la philologie classique. Une grande importance y est donnée à la continuité et à l’actualité de la lecture des textes antiques, particulièrement dans les domaines de l’histoire de la transmission, de l’interprétation ainsi que de l’historique de la discipline philologique. Pour toucher un public aussi large que possible, cette collection comprendra des volumes dans les langues courantes du monde scientifique. Die Reihe fördert – ihrem Titel entsprechend – die Interpretation antiker griechischer und lateinischer Texte und bietet Raum nicht nur für Monographien zu speziellen Themen und Autoren, sondern auch für Ausgaben mit erklärenden Anmerkungen oder einem ausführlichen Kommentar. Der Tradition der kritischen Wissenschaft verpflichtet, versteht sich die Reihe als eine streng philologische, ohne sich jedoch neuen Richtungen und erweiterten Methoden der textlichen Auslegung zu verschliessen. Die aufgenommenen Bände tragen aus eigenständiger Forschung zum Verständnis antiker Texte bei, sei es durch deren Exegese, sei es durch problembezogene Untersuchungen. In diesem Sinn bilden sie originale Beiträge zur Klassischen Philologie. Grosse Bedeutung innerhalb der Reihe kommt dem Nachleben antiker Texte zu, und zwar in erster Linie der Überlieferungs- und Interpretationsgeschichte sowie dem historischen Aspekt der philologischen Disziplin. Russian Transformations: Literature, Culture and Ideas

Russian Transformations publishes studies across the entire extent of Russian literature, thought and culture from the medieval period to the present. The series gives special emphasis to the kinds of transformation that characterise Russian, Soviet and post-Soviet writing. Transformation has often been under the stimulus of (and resistance to) foreign traditions. Acts of cross-cultural and cross-literary reception mark Russia's sense of creative development and national identity. Transformation has often been the result of the on-going dialogues between writers working within the Russian literary tradition through polemic and subtle use of intertextuality. Similarly, the stunning political and social changes that have been characteristic of Russian history generated radical transformation in the institutions of literature and in forms of literature from Modernism to post-Perestroika as writers react to official policy on freedom of expression.

The authors reflect various aspects of contemporary English culture. The series’ editor is Professor Miroslawa Buchholtz. Her research focus includes Canadian and American literature, the reception of Anglophone literature in Poland, and literary translation.

New Comparative Criticism is dedicated to innovative research in literary and cultural studies. It invites contributions with a comparative, cross-cultural, and interdisciplinary focus, including comparative studies of themes, genres, and periods, and research in the following fields: world literature, environmental humanities, literary and cultural theory, material and visual cultures, speculative fiction, reception studies, cultural history, comparative gender studies and performance studies, diasporas and migration studies, and transmediality. The series is especially interested in research that articulates and examines new developments in comparative literature, in the English-speaking world and beyond. It seeks to advance methodological reflection on comparative literature and aims to encourage critical dialogue between scholars of comparative literature at an international level. German Visual Culture

German Visual Culture invites research on German art across different periods, geographical locations, and political contexts. Books in the series engage with aesthetic and ideological continuities as well as ruptures and divergences between individual artists, movements, systems of art education, art institutions, and cultures of display. Challenging scholarship that interrogates and updates existing orthodoxies in the field is desirable. A guiding question of the series is the impact of German art on critical and public spheres, both inside and outside the German-speaking world. Reception is thus conceived in the broadest possible terms, including both the ways in which art has been perceived and defined as well as the ways in which modern and contemporary German artists have undertaken visual dialogues with their predecessors or contemporaries. Issues of cultural transfer, critical race theory and related postcolonial analysis, feminism, queer theory, and other interdisciplinary approaches are encouraged, as are studies on production and consumption, especially the art market, pioneering publishing houses, and the ‘little magazines’ of the avant-garde. All proposals for monographs and edited collections in the history of German visual culture will be considered, although English will be the language of all contributions. Submissions are subject to rigorous peer review. The series will be promoted through the series editor’s Research Forum for German Visual Culture (https://www.eca.ed.ac.uk/research/research-forum-german-visual-culture), which he founded at the University of Edinburgh in 2011, and which has involved various symposia and related publications, all connected to an international network of Germanist scholars.

Romantic Studies

This series is mainly focused on English literature produced in Europe between the 1750s and the 1830s. It aims to explore the key concepts regarding Romantic texts and aesthetics, such as the relationship between the writer and the natural world; context and history; sensibility and the sublime; gender roles; language and the power of the imagination; studies of genre; slavery and abolition; migration literature, consumer literature; social transformation; critical reception; and transnational relations. The series welcomes studies on major as well as less well-known authors and literary genres, and on historical and cultural contexts of the period. Within this framework, volumes included in this series will not only expand the canon beyond traditional authors and genres, but also provide opportunities for exploring texts and contexts from new perspectives, including those of gender, cultural and translation studies. The series includes monographs, collection of essays, conference proceedings, critical editions and translations, and aims to address an international community.

Nobody disputes the modern relevance of Marguerite Yourcenar’s work. Back in 1981, when she was the first woman to be elected to the Académie Française, her work was received enthusiastically, rather deferentially even; there was something of an aura surrounding it with the media attention her election attracted. But this time is now past and more recent research activity has taken a new turn, with critical attention focusing on Yourcenar’s roots in her own century. The study of traditional major themes – death, the sacred, nature, history etc. – has given way to the study of more comparative, theoretical issues such as the relationship between text and images, and more incisive issues such as ecology, gender, political activism etc. And her work seems to expand accordingly, offering up a seemingly inexhaustible supply of subject matter, not only through her novels but also through her novellas, her many essays, plays, letters and so on. The primary objective of the «Yourcenar» series is to publish monographs, collected volumes, conference proceedings and volumes resulting from doctoral research which will give our intended public of academics and Yourcenar devotees a regularly updated idea of the state of the art in the field. Cross-disciplinary approaches are encouraged. The intention is to publish two volumes per year, in either English or French. The collection is directed by Francesca Counihan (Maynooth University) and Bérengère Deprez (Université catholique de Louvain). L’actualité de l’œuvre de Marguerite Yourcenar ne fait aucun doute. Passé un moment de réception enthousiaste et plutôt déférente de ses écrits, auréolés et très médiatisés par son admission comme première femme à l’Académie française en 1981, il semble que la recherche ait pris un virage vers la critique attentive de l’enracinement de l’écrivaine dans son siècle. À l’examen des grands thèmes comme la mort, le sacré, la nature, l’histoire, etc., ont succédé des questions plus comparatistes, plus théoriques telles le rapport texte/image ou plus incisives telles l’écologie, la dimension de genre, l’engagement politique, etc. Et l’œuvre répond présente : la matière semble inépuisable, non seulement les romans mais les nouvelles, les nombreux essais, le théâtre, la correspondance, etc. La collection « Yourcenar » a pour ambition de présenter à un public universitaire académique ou non, ainsi qu’aux nombreux passionnés de l’œuvre de Marguerite Yourcenar, un état des lieux régulier de la recherche, par la publication de monographies, de volumes collectifs, d’actes de colloques et d’essais issus de thèses de doctorat.
