  • Mikrokosmos

    Beiträge zur germanistischen und allgemeinen Literaturwissenschaft

    Wolfgang Harms established the Mikrokosmos series in 1974 and was later joined by Peter Strohschneider as co-editor. In 2015, editorial responsibility was taken over by Frieder von Ammon and Michael Waltenberger. The monographs and anthologies published in this series focus on subjects in the field of German-speaking literature from the distant past right up to the present. Areas of contact with neighbouring literature, relations to other forms of art, and interrelationships with cultural contexts are also addressed. Particular focus lies on studies that analyse their subject matter in great depth, combined with extensive conceptual and methodical reflection, to produce advanced contributions to topics currently under discussion in the field of literature theory. Die Reihe Mikrokosmos wurde 1974 von Wolfgang Harms gegründet, später von ihm gemeinsam mit Peter Strohschneider herausgegeben. Seit 2015 liegt die Herausgeberschaft bei Frieder von Ammon und Michael Waltenberger. Die Monographien und Sammelbände der Reihe befassen sich mit Themen aus dem Gesamtbereich der deutschsprachigen Literatur von ihren Anfängen bis zur Gegenwart. Kontaktzonen zu den Nachbarliteraturen, Beziehungen zu den anderen Künsten und Wechselwirkungen mit kulturellen Kontexten werden mitbeachtet. Einen Schwerpunkt bilden Studien, die mit dem präzisen analytischen Zugriff auf ihren Gegenstand einen hohen Grad an konzeptueller und methodischer Reflexion verbinden und auf diese Weise avancierte Beiträge zu aktuellen literaturtheoretischen Diskussionen liefern können.

  • Telecollaboration in Education

    The series' focus is on the pedagogical processes and outcomes of engaging learners in different geographical locations in virtual contact and collaboration together. This contact can take place through the application of online communication tools such as e-mail, synchronous chat and threaded discussion as well as the tools of Web 2.0: like wikis, blogs, and online publishing. The series is also particularly interested in innovative teaching practices involving telecollaboration that integrate the use of newly emerging forms of Internet tools such as social networking or 3D virtual worlds. A major aim is to reflect the diversity of research and practice in this area of knowledge, providing a space for transversal dialogue among teachers and teacher trainers, administrators, researchers, and educators working in different subject areas as well as various areas of education. Telecollaboration in Education deals with the application of such activity in different subject areas (e.g. Foreign Languages, History, Science) and in different educational contexts, including but not limited to primary, secondary, university and adult education. Publications within the series include scholarly monographs and collected papers editions as well as cutting-edge projects that exemplify good practice in the application of distanced collaborative efforts. Training manuals for educators in the organisation and application of telecollaboration are also a possible type of publication within the series. Language of publication is English.

  • Critical Intercultural Communication Studies

    Critical approaches to the study of intercultural communication have arisen at the end of the 20th century and are poised to flourish in the new millenium.. As cultures come into contact driven by migration, refugees, the internet, wars, media, transnational capitalism, cultural imperialism, and more, critical interrogations of the ways that cultures interact communicatively are a needed aspect of understanding culture and communication. This series will interrogate --from a critical perspective--the role of communication in intercultural contact, in both domestic and international contexts. Through attentiveness to the complexities of power relations in intercultural communication, this series is open to studies in key areas such as postcolonialism, transnationalism, critical race theory, queer diaspora studies, and critical feminist approaches as they relate to intercultural communication. Proposals might focus on various contexts of intercultural communication such as international advertising, popular culture, language policies, hate crimes, ethnic cleansing and ethnic group conficts, as well as engaging theoretical issues such as hybridity, displacement, multiplicity, identity, orientalism, and materialism. By creating a space for these critical approaches, this series will be at the forefront of this new wave in intercultural communication scholarship. Manuscripts and proposals are welcome which advance this new approach.

  • Cuadernos de Yuste

    The «Cuadernos de Yuste» series collects the multilingual and cross-disciplinary contributions from the summer doctoral seminars organized by the European Academy of Yuste Foundation on European issues related to those linked to the work carried out by winners of the «Charles V European Award», given every two years. The seminars are coordinated by members of the Economic Governance and European Identity network, which gather German, Belgian, Spanish, French and Italian scholars who are joined by experts on the matters of discussion. The seminars welcome doctoral students, who may thus compare their current research, benefit from quality supervision and contact researchers from previous seminars that constitute the «Alumni from Yuste European Network». The series is open to other collective or monographic works - in German, English, Spanish and French -, that deal with issues studied in previous publications, such as Socio Economic Governance and European Identity; Relations between Europe and Russia in the 19th and 20th Centuries; Portugal and Spain in 20th Century Europe, Translation and Interpretation, or with topics that will be studied in forthcoming seminars. «Cuadernos de Yuste» recoge las actas, multilingües y pluridisciplinares, de los seminarios doctorales organizados por la Fundación Academia Europea de Yuste sobre temas europeos relacionados con aquellos temas que marcaron la labor de las personas galardonadas con el prestigioso «Premio Europeo Carlos V» otorgado cada dos años. Estos seminarios, que están coordinados por los miembros de la red Socio Economic Governance and European Identity (Gobernanza Socioeconómica e Identidad Europea), que reúne a profesores universitarios alemanes, belgas, españoles, franceses e italianos, a los que se unen, según el caso, otros expertos, acogen a estudiantes de doctorado que pueden, de esta manera, confrontar sus investigaciones en curso, beneficiarse de una supervisión de calidad y estar en contacto con los investigadores que participaron en seminarios anteriores y que constituyen la Red Europea de Alumni de Yuste. Diese interdisziplinären Studien stehen im Zusammenhang mit Leben und Werk der Preisträger des «Karl V. Europa-Preises», welcher in zwei-Jahres-Abständen verliehen wird. Die Seminare werden koordiniert von Mitgliedern des Forschungsnetzwerkes «Socio Economic Governance and European Identities», in dem Forscher aus Belgien, Deutschland, Frankreich, Italien und Spanien vereinigt sind. Zusätzlich werden zu den Seminaren gezielt einschlägig arbeitende Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler eingeladen. So können im Rahmen der Sommerseminare Doktorandinnen und Doktoranden aus ganz Europa ihre Forschungserkenntnisse präsentieren und mit etablierten Forschern sowie mit Teilnehmern vorangegangener Seminare diskutieren. Zusammen bilden sie die Gruppe der «Alumni des Yuste-Europanetzwerkes». Die Buchreihe versteht sich auch als Veröffentlichungsort für solche Publikationsvorhaben, sei es als Monographien oder als Sammelbände, die sich mit Themen befassen, welche in vorangegangenen Veröffentlichungen behandelt worden sind: Gesellschafts- und Wirtschaftspolitik und Europäische Identität, Beziehungen zwischen Russland und Europa im 19. und 20.   • Vampire Studies: New Perspectives on the Undead

    Vampires are everywhere. Appearing on streaming services, in book series and on multimedia platforms, vampires and the undead are an integral part of popular culture in the twenty-first century. But vampires have a long and varied history across cultures from at least the early eighteenth century onwards. Nina Auerbach once commented on their cultural ubiquity: ‘Every age embraces the vampire it needs, and gets the vampire it deserves’. The inherently transformative properties of vampires have made them uniquely able to reflect the age in which they appear. As a result, they provide original and multiple perspectives, not just on culture, but on established and emerging areas of study. Vampires and the undead serve as a useful lens for exploring Indigeneity, environmental studies and the ecogothic; identity, ethnicity and gender politics; material culture, spectatorship and fan cultures; hybridity, post-humanism and futurities; disability, mental health and ageing studies; and theology, philosophy and politics. These new territories and methodologies of vampire studies also retroactively shift the ways we view and understand earlier iterations of the undead and the different cultures they materialized from. In this first book series dedicated to vampire studies, authors will explore the ongoing evolution of vampires and the undead in the broadest sense – including the supernatural, super-human and non-human, and across cultures, histories and media – and will use new theoretical frameworks to offer original and innovative readings of established and more recent texts. This original series aims to provide a focused hub for the diverse and often dispersed body of study that sees the vampire and the undead not as a subgenre of other categories such as the Gothic or horror, but as a genre in its own right that intersects with others. An important dimension of the series is diversity and the inclusion of multiple cultural and minority perspectives, including LGBTQ+, disability, Indigeneity, and any approaches that encourage new ways of viewing the cultural impact of vampires and the undead and widen our understanding of an ever-expanding genre. Proposals for monographs and edited collections are warmly invited. All projects undergo rigorous peer review.     The book series "Studies in Pedagogy, Andragogy, and Gerontagogy" is dedicated to theoretical and empirical research in adult education and continuing training. It aims at critically accompanying the process of the discipline's internationalization and reflects on its inbound and outbound effects. It provides a transnational forum which perpetuates the agendas of national and international conferences. It offers also a space for such foundation works which serve the constitution and international comparison of adult education and continuing training. Outstanding scientists as well as young and ambitious scholars are addressed. Books are published in English or German language. Book proposals are welcome and should be submitted to the editors. After a successful review by the editors and the publisher (or peer review) they will suggested for publication in the series.   • Critical Studies of Latinxs in the Americas

    The Latinx presence continues to grow and intersect with every aspect of life in the 21st century. This is evident when one considers the appointment of Sonia Sotomayor as Associate Justice to the United States Supreme Court. As well as the prominence of distinct Latinx individuals in various spheres of social, cultural, and political life such as Mario J. Molina, Nobel Prize winner and recipient of the Medal of the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013; and Jorge Maria Bergoglio (Pope Francis) who has revolutionized the Catholic church since he became the highest ecclesiastical authority of the Catholic world in 2013. Latino Studies, as an academic field of inquiry, began to emerge during the early 1990s surfacing from the more recognized field of Chicano Studies. As such, the major contributions to the field first emerged from Mexican/Chicano scholarship—publications such as Aztlán, the most important journal in the field of Chicano Studies since 1970; Gloria Anzaldúa’’s groundbreaking memoir/essay, Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza (1987); George J. Sanchez’s historical account, Becoming Mexican American: Ethnicity, Culture, and Identity in Chicano Los Angeles, 1900-1945 (1995); and the two volumes of The Chicano Studies Reader: An Anthology of Aztlan, 1970-2010. These are a few examples of the consolidation and the continuing development of Chicano Studies in the United States. In the past two decades, Latino Studies have grown and expanded significantly. There have been a large number of publications about Latinxs in the Midwest and North East; in addition, due to the fast-growing population of Latinxs in the area, new scholarship has emerged about the Latinxs in the New South. Some examples of the emerging field of Latino Studies are the Latinos on the East Coast (2015) edited by Yolanda Medina and Ángeles Donoso Macaya, Global Cities and Immigrants (2015) by Francisco Velasco Caballero and María de los Angeles Torres; the Handbook of Latinos and Education (2010) edited by Enrique Murillo, et al.; Angela Anselmo’s and Alma Rubal-Lopez’s 2004 On Becoming Nuyoricans; David Carey Jr. and Robert Atkinson (2009) Latino Voices in New England; Yolanda Prieto’s case study entitled, The Cubans of Union City: Immigrants and Exiles in a New Jersey Community (2009); and Lawrence La Fontaine-Stokes’ Queer Ricans Cultures and Sexualities in the Diaspora (2009). Critical Studies of Latinxs in the Americas will become the counterpart of the aforementioned research about the Latinx diaspora that deserve equal scholarly attention and will add to the academic field of inquiry that highlights the lived experience, consequential progress and contributions, as well as the issues and concerns that all Latinxs face in present times. This provocative series will offer a critical space for reflection and questioning of what it means to be Latinx living in the Americas, extending the dialogue to include the North and South hemispheric relations that are prevalent in other fields of global studies such as Post-Colonial Theory, Post-Colonial Feminism, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Critical Race Theory, and others. This broader scope can contribute to prolific interdisciplinary research and can also promote changes in policies and practices that will enable today’s leaders to deal with the overall issues that affect us all. Topics that explore contemporary inequalities and social exclusions associated with processes of racialization, economic exploitation, health, education, transnationalism, immigration, identity politics, and abilities that are not commonly highlighted in the current literature as well as the multitude of socio-economic, and cultural commonalities and differences among the Latinxs in the Americas will be at the center of the series. As the Latinx population continues to grow and change, and universities enhance their Latino Studies programs to be inclusive of all types of Latinx identities, a series dedicated to the lived experience of Latinxs in the Americas and a consideration of their progress and concerns in the social, cultural, political, economic, and artistic arenas is of incredible value in the quest for pedagogical practices and understandings that apply a critical perspective to the issues facing scholars in this area of study. Scholars, faculties, and students alike will benefit from this series. Expressions of interest for authored or edited books will be considered on a first come basis.
