2284 World Society

Iaian Vernier's Memoir

Seymour W. Itzkoff

2284: World Society, Iaian Vernier’s Memoir is a fascinating study of mankind. Written as a work of fiction, it looks at the human condition 200 years in the future. Predicting the outcome of today’s social policies, 2284 is a cultural anthropology study that adds to Itzkoff’s extensive writing on the topic. Iaian Vernier writes in 2284 of the revolutionary internationalism that has been established in Nairobi, Africa. He chronicles the disasters that almost destroyed the twenty-first-century world. He describes in anecdote and philosophical depth the new scientific and secular world that has been established to bring peace, equality, ethnic diversity and democracy to humanity, while scrutinizing the plans for demographic stability that will sustain humanity into the future. In the twenty-third century, the forbidden rationality of the scientific minds of the twenty-first century have been unleashed.

Chapter 13. Ethnicity

← 80 | 81 →·13·

We have been integrating certain basic understandings of human behavior and the underlying neurological causal structures for a long time now. There is, of course, this vast cortical accretion which produces the buzzing, blooming search for meanings in this complex interplay of physical and biological experiences. Include our self-created sociality and the buzzing and blooming becomes a cacophony of sensory inputs and symbolic outputs. There is no guarantee that the two will result in an adaptive outcome.

Below the cortex in our brain structure lies a multitude of mammalian- derived elements involving basic physical and sensory integrations of behavior as well as a flood of what might be called limbic system energies. This emotional overflow surges upward into our cortical grey matter to be organized and turned into useful social symbolic forms of meaning. These two systems can be recognized in lower mammalian forms and in our hominid ancestors. In the morphological revolution which is Hs and Hss, the derivative can be civilization or barbarism.

The emotional juices of the limbic system can certainly give tonality to our most mundane intellectual/cerebral tasks. Scientists and inventors have ← 81 | 82 →testified to the emotional qualities that their seemingly hard-nosed work requires. But the symbolics of the limbic system even as shaped cortically into tangible expression involve the softer forms of culture, the arts, religion, sports. Sadly these emotions show themselves harshly in such cultural institutions as patriotism, the flag, uniforms, weapons and the surge to kill.
