Communication Ethics in a Connected World

What are the main ethical challenges for strategic communication and public relations professionals today? How can researchers help in understanding and dealing with these challenges in a complex and interconnected world? This book offers some answers to these questions, based on contributions by researchers from different European countries and other continents. The chapters of the first section focus on general concepts about communication and public relations ethics as well as corporate social responsibility. Three sections then deal with: the specific situation of communication and PR ethics in various European countries; the evolution of ethical skills of communication professionals; and the interaction between communication ethics and the public sphere. The final two sections offer insights on recent research in public relations, like employee communication and engagement, mentoring in public relations and the evolution of media relations and social media communication.

Leif Åberg, D.Soc.Sc., is Professor Emeritus in Organisational Communication in the Department of Social Studies at the University of Helsinki, Finland. He is interested in strategic and managerial communications, strategic public relations, and in the dynamics of spontaneous activities.

Ronald C. Arnett, Ph.D., is Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication & Rhetorical Studies at Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, PA, USA. He holds the Henry Koren, C.S.Sp., Endowed Chair for Scholarly Excellence. He is the author and co-author of nine books and numerous articles, ranging from the philosophy of communication and communication ethics to the origins of leadership.

Pekka Aula, Dr., is Professor of Innovation Communication in the School of Technology at Lappeenranta University of Technology, Finland, and Professor of Communication in the Department of Social Research at the University of Helsinki, Finland. His research interests cover the formation and reformation, construction and reconstruction of communicative processes in and between complex organisations in the context of the contemporary media landscape.

Tor Bang, Dr., is Associate Professor in the Department of Communication and Culture at BI Norwegian Business School, Oslo. His research area is political communication, political rhetoric and general public relations. He has published about the freedom of expression in digital media and media economy in the local political sphere of Norway.

Günter Bentele, Dr., is Professor Emeritus for Public Relations at the University of Leipzig, Germany, and serves as Chair of the German Council of Public Relations Ethics...
