Approaches of Biology Teacher Candidates towards Ecological Products

Abstract: This study aims at determining the approaches of pre-service biology teachers towards ecological products by considering their environmental concern and environmental behaviours. Accordingly, the data collection tool which is available in literature and is composed of six sub-dimensions has been used. The sample group of the research is composed of 135 pre-service biology teachers who study in Ankara in the 2014–2015 Spring Semester. As a result of the research, it has been realised that environmental behaviours of pre-service biology teachers do not indicate any meaningful difference in accordance with the class level, their green products awareness indicates a meaningful difference in accordance with the settlements, but their tendencies of environmentally conscious purchasing do not indicate any difference. There is a meaningful difference between their green product awareness and their environmentally conscious purchasing behaviours.

1. Introduction

The increase in the world’s population and welfare level also increased the demand in agricultural products. The tendency of obtaining high efficiency from agricultural products gained much more importance in order to fulfill the increasing demands. Accordingly, improvement works, fertilisation and the usage of pesticides in agricultural products seriously increased. Especially when people could not be provided with adequate and cheap food after World War II, the usage of synthetic chemical fertilisers and pesticides increased in agriculture (Günay, 2007).
