The fact that environmental issues, which cause a significant externality within global goods, have gained a global dimension, necessitated more concrete steps for challenging with environmental issues. At this point, efforts to reduce environmental issues and protect the environment have been on the axis of sustainability. This book contains theoretical and empirical researches written by academicians and researches in the field of environment and sustainability. In the contributions, the macro dimensions of environmental pollution such as economic growth, health sector and technological development are examined. In addition to these, the contributors deal with micro dimensions such as consumption, marketing, accounting and firm behavior both in theory and empirically.

Introduction

Global changes such as rapid population growth, industrialization, urbanization and technological developments bring about some interventions on the environment made by humans. Environmental problems occur as a result of these human-induced interventions that disturb the natural balance. Environmental problems, which were grouped under air, land and water pollution, during the early days of industrialization, have increased and become more diversified as a result of the factors that emerged over time. Today, there are many global environmental problems, ranging from radioactive pollution, noise pollution and the loss of biodiversity to ozone layer depletion.

In Turkey, healthcare services include services of public nature provided either by the state or by the private sector under the guidance and supervision of the state. Hazardous materials used as required by the nature of healthcare services, wastes generated during the provision of healthcare services and the use of energy in healthcare services constitute the environmental dimension of healthcare services. The environmental awareness of environmental problems has brought the need to address the environmental dimension of healthcare services. In this sense, issues such as construction of energy efficient green buildings, hazardous materials management, waste management and construction of green hospitals have been focused on in the literature. This study serves the purpose of assessing the development of a sustainable healthcare sector within the framework of environmental impacts of this sector.
