15:   The Health Professions of the Future

1 Introduction

The factors affecting the needs for health professions can be listed as five global changes. The first one is demographic and epidemiological changes such as the aging of populations, urbanization, a more mobile lifestyle and the increase in noncommunicable diseases. Second factor is that people are more educated and more easily access the information. Third factor is that there are ongoing developments in the field of biology and information technologies. Fourth one is that the healthcare costs increase considerably. The fifth factor is that there is an increased recognition of health services as a fundamental human right and general health insurance and the generalization of social equality in health as a result of that. There is a need of redesigning health systems and health professions in accordance with these global changes (Crisp and Chen, 2014).

The roles of health professionals are dynamic. Constantly changing health services, technological developments and new lines of business create new roles or change long-standing roles (Dubois et al., 2006). Sibbald et al. devised a scientific classification on the ways of changing roles of healthcare staff. Although the studies on this subject is not sufficient, most of the forms of change in professional roles gradually occur because some groups assume new roles and others leave them.
