20:   New Approaches in Audiology

1 Introduction

It is not possible for the health field to stay out of the trend line in our rapidly changing and developing world with technological progress. Audiology Science has a special position in the human-oriented health sciences, which use technological equipment in its works and aims to benefit from the developments at the highest level. Smartphone-based application, artificial intelligence and virtual reality stand out among the current applications that are studied and developed in our brunch of science where technology is used extensively during both the examination and diagnosis phase and the treatment rehabilitation phase.

2 New Approaches in Audiology

2.1 Hearing Evaluation with Smart Phone Applications

Measuring the hearing health with conventional hearing test methods cause time loss and an economic burden for the patient. While trying to develop this process, studies are being carried out to place smartphone based audiometric measurement methods alongside existing methods. In a hearing screening study, 162 children (324 ears) aged between 5 and 7 years were tested (Swanepoel et al., 2014). For this study, the Sennheiser HD 202 headphones were adapted and used with 4 android phones. Hearing screening was performed using narrowband noise in the 30–75 dB SPL sound range. The control group consisted of 15 subjects with an age range of 18–22 years and normal hearing limits. During the study, care was taken to calibrate the audiometer and android...
