Variazioni sull'apocalisse

Edited By Alessandro Baldacci, Anna Małgorzata Brysiak and Tomasz Skocki

Abstract: This chapter aims to analyze the thematic and figural evolutions of the zombie and its apocalyptic fiction, from the American horror cinema of the Thirties to the recent TV series productions. To illustrate these evolutions, the analysis will focus on the category of the “post-zombies”: hybrid figures in which the zombies’ morphologies are interwoven with those from other “undead” or “living dead” entities, which narratives are often characterized by an unexpectable exhumation of their past lives. In my opinion, the post-zombies rise as cultural consequence of “zombie renaissance” concept, developed by K.W. Bishop (2010) and as phenomenon of a progressive “humanization of the zombies”, which is deeply thematised within some recent TV series. To illustrate these arguments, as case study it will be mainly taken in consideration the French TV Series Les Revenants, with the purpose to observe: 1. the suggestive materialization of some Revelation verses; 2. the deep inheritance from the previous cinematic zombies; 3. the narrative and visual modes employed to integrate death within the social cycle of the living, with particular attention to the use of a spectral aesthetic in opposition to the typical splatter materialism of the zombie movies tradition.
