1 What Is a Physician?

Medicine is a field that covers knowledge, technology, artistic approach and communication skills. The fact that medicine is a multidirectional activity, which cannot be reduced to a single dimension, enables it to be seen as an applied science, an art and a subculture beyond being a profession2,3. Science is analytical, art is a synthetic field. No matter how scientific it is, the artistic side of medicine is dominant, because it has social and cultural fronts. Therefore, it is important for a physician to know that besides being a technician and scientist, he has other characteristics and that his profession is closely related to the whole of culture such as religion, philosophy, economy, literature and art4.

Medicine is defined as a profession that aims to restore health or protect health by loving people without expecting anything with tolerance5. The physician, who evaluates the human not only with its biological characteristics but also with its psychological and social aspects2, is defined as a wise person who examines the patients, performs the diagnosis and treatment, knows his job, does it meticulously6. It is stated that the profession of medicine is essentially the job of wise people who prevent misinformation, ignorance and disease, protect health and have wisdom7. Although physicians are often defined as people who have the power to treat patients, physicians not only treat the disease but also decide what the disease is.
