Juozas Žilionis The Spread of Gabriel Petkeviait-Bite‘s Ideas of Education The relevance of the problem: Gabriel Petkeviait-Bit‘s socio-cultural and educational activities played an important role in the period of Lithuanian libera- tion movement. Both in her theoretical and practical work she propagated de- mocratic education ideas, based on moral and aesthetic values, put the founda- tions for feminine pedagogics, prepared an active citizen, conditioned national consciousness, encouraged respect and tolerance towards the people of other na- tions or believes. The aim of the analysis is to reveal expression of G. Petkeviait-Bit educa- tional ideas and peculiarities of their implementation. The aim of the analysis is implemented by the analytical-interpretational method. G. Petkeviait-Bit, as many members of Lithuanian liberation movement of 19th-20th centuries, can be characterised as combining her wide social work with educative activities. In these years the progressive Lithuanian intelligentsia along with distributing the banned press, leading secret cultural associations, or- ganising „barn theatres“ also paid much attention to direct pedagogical work. The writers of this period made a great contribution into these activities as well. P.Višinskis tried to raise the literacy of a native country; Žemait made an effort to get children interested into literacy; M. Pekauskait worked in different edu- cational areas, an active educator in her surroundings was J. Juškait. Lithuanian intelligentsia women were creating the national model of education by propagat- ing ‘feminine pedagogics’ in the nation‘s cultural layer in their own distinctive and original way. G.
