(Fengli Lan) When Chinese Medicine Meets Constructive Realism: Cooperation since 2007 1. How did you learn to know Friedrich Wallner and the Construktive Realism? By recommendation of Prof. Dr. Paul U. Unschuld in 2006, currently the Direc- tor of Horst-Görtz-Stiftungsinstitut of Charité-Universitätsmedizin in Berlin. I was then invited as both a translator and a speaker to attend an international conference – “Analysis of Central Expressions of Chinese Medicine in Context of Modern Western Medicine” (22.4. -9.5. 2007, Swiss Hotel in Beijing), which was co-organized by Prof. Dr. Friedrich Wallner and Prof. Dr. Gertrude Kubiena. On that occasion, I translated Prof. Wallner’s paper “How to Research TCM” into Chinese, and interpreted his keynote speech based on this paper to Chinese ex- perts. In his paper and speech, Constructive Realism, its ontology, methodology, and epistemology are clearly expounded. By the way, I presented two papers at the conference: “Who Translated Huang Di Nei Jing?” and “The Origin of Qi, Yin-Yang and Wu Xing as Chinese Medical Terms and Their Translation”. The proceedings of the conference‚ was published with the title Understanding Traditional Chinese Medicine” by Peter Lang in 2009. The cooperation started since then in 2007 – I have been a backbone mem- ber of two interdisciplinary research projects chaired by Prof. Friedrich Wallner: “Cultural Dependency of Medical Knowledge” and “Theory, Methodology and Structure of TCM”. 2.
