Der Zeithistoriker Aretin oder: Wer war Aretin bei seiner Berufung 1964? by Christof Dipper
The article presents the exceptional character of Aretin’s contributions to current history which were as unconventional as clear sighted and accompanied by critical analyses of present times published mostly in newspapers and non-scientific journals. But it was just this democratic perspective of historiography which earned him the sympathy of Eugen Kogon, the political scientist in search of a valuable counterbalance to a fellow-historian in the Faculty whose papers and books became more and more scandalous. So Aretin was appointed to a full professorship of contemporary history without any publication in university-based journals and without any ‘serious’ book on current history. Yet Aretin soon met Kogon’s expectations and thus became the founding-father of the Department of History at the Technische Hochschule Darmstadt.
