Perceptions of Female Prisoners of Violence Against Women

Extract

Introduction

Based on the feminist argument claiming that gender based violence is a socially constructed concept which has been reproduced in traditional patriarchal societies, the aim of this study is to understand the violence against women as seen through the eyes of female prisoners. Understanding female prisoners’ perspectives on gender based violence is important in analysing violence against women, as they somehow ‘violated’ their gender roles by committing a crime and are thus different from women outside of the prison.
