Vom Lesen zum Schreiben in der Wissenschaftssprache Deutsch
Abstract The didactic concept introduced in this paper is tailored to the special preconditions and requirements of students who are not native German speakers. It aims to convey basics of academic writing practices and typical features of academic texts. The seminar teaches students to learn how to write and use German appropriately and thus intends to support them in the foundation and (further) advancement of their reading and writing competences. In the seminar and its integrated writing course, the stages of the writing process and characteristics of scientific texts are introduced on a theoretical level while complementary exercises allow students to practice their newly acquired knowledge and reflect on it.
The paper’s focus is on the transition from reading to writing. It is shown how the interplay of instruction and writing assignments, on the one hand, can facilitate the students’ basic grasp of how reading and comprehending academic texts are central to the conception of their own texts while, on the other, their personal experience and reflection supports their awareness of the process. In this context it becomes clear that the strategies may also prove useful in many professional fields beyond academic contexts.
