by Alexandra Corey (Volume editor)
©2026 Edited Collection XVIII, 186 Pages

Summary

This book explores the political and literary culture of sixteenth-century Savoy through the lens of Emmanuel-Philibert de Pingon, a court poet, diplomat and historiographer embedded in the political life of the duchy. It examines how literary production and personal networks shaped Savoyard identity during a period of territorial occupation and shifting European alliances. Drawing on archival research, rare manuscripts and interdisciplinary methods, it investigates themes of diplomacy, historiography, antiquarianism and cultural memory. The studies gathered here shed new light on the ambitions of a smaller state asserting its identity within early modern Europe.

Preface

This volume stems from the conference Emmanuel-Philibert de Pingon (1525–1582) et son temps, held over three days at Trinity College Dublin in September of 2022. This conference brought together scholars from across Europe and the UK, generating vibrant discussions in English, French and Italian that expanded existing knowledge on Pingon and sixteenth-century Savoy. Many of the contributions in this volume are drawn from the papers presented at the conference, capturing the breadth of interest in the political, cultural and intellectual dimensions of Emmanuel-Philibert de Pingon’s life and his enduring influence.

Special thanks go to the Trinity Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies and Trinity College Dublin Department of French for their support of the conference and to the Trinity Association and Trust for their support of related archival research. I also extend my gratitude to the Archives départementales de Savoie, the Archives départementales de la Haute-Savoie, the Royal Library, National University Library and State Archives in Turin as well as the Municipal Library in Lyon for providing invaluable access to Pingon’s manuscripts and other primary sources.

The aim of this collection is to address gaps in the scholarship surrounding Emmanuel-Philibert de Pingon and the history of early modern Savoy. By drawing on interdisciplinary perspectives from historiography, political science, visual culture and literary analysis, it sheds new light on the influence of a smaller state on the political and cultural landscapes of sixteenth-century Europe. The theme of self-fashioning is especially pertinent here, as Pingon’s works intertwine with Savoy’s broader ambitions towards independence. His self-presentation through his works, which encompass autobiography, encomiastic poetry and historiography, aimed to elevate the House of Savoy to a literary stature on par with the neighbouring kingdoms of France and Spain. In this way, Pingon’s works reflect how personal and dynastic identities were mutually constructed, inviting us to consider how identity is shaped by the frameworks of our time.

On 18 January 2025, we celebrated Pingon’s quincentennial: a testament to the enduring legacy of his contributions. As you engage with this volume, may it inspire curiosity and inquiry into the lives and legacies that continue to shape our understanding of European history. I hope that this work will encourage future research by inviting readers to reflect on the challenges of piecing together fragments of the past, and to appreciate the lasting resonance of the narratives that once shaped our world.
