Exploring the Multimodal Configuration of the Audio Description Script

The edited volume Disciplines Beyond Boundaries is the result of a collaboration among researchers from various fields within the humanities. This volume emerged from the conviction that scientific projects that transcend the boundaries of traditional disciplines have a special value. However, in this publication, interdisciplinarity is not an end in itself, but rather a means of enabling a deeper and more critical view of the reality that surrounds us, taking into account its complexity and multi-layered nature.

The volume comprises nine academic articles presenting empirical analyses of specific linguistic and cultural phenomena. The first article, Microstructure of Early Polyglot Dictionaries, by Anna Grzeszak, examines the diversity of early multilingual dictionaries from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and analyzes their internal structure. The differences identified in the microstructure of individual dictionaries prompt the author to attempt to classify them according to her own criteria. In the article The Orthographies of Udmurt and Komi in the Shadow of Russian, Szymon Pawlas presents the historical processes of adapting the Russian alphabet to the phonological systems of Udmurt and Komi. The author examines how dependence on the orthographic conventions of the Russian language has influenced the development of writing in Udmurt and Komi languages. Musterreplikationen im Präpositionalsystem unter Sprachkontakt by Anna Jorroch and Irena Prawdzic analyzes changes in the prepositional system of spoken German among German-Polish bilinguals. The authors examine correlations and the influence of linguistic biography on deviations in the use of prepositions in spoken German. The focus of Exploring the Multimodal Configuration of the Audio Description Script is audio description, which is primarily intended for blind and visually impaired people. In his essay, Alejandro Romero-Muñoz attempts to examine the possible applications of multimodal models in audio description. The article Zum Frauenbild im Ost-West-Konflikt in Filmen von Krzysztof Zanussi focuses on three German films by Krzysztof Zanussi: Wege in der Nacht (1979), Die Versuchung (1981), and Das Jahr der ruhigen Sonne (1984). The authors, Michał Jamiołkowski and Robert Małecki, describe and examine in detail the fates of the main female protagonists, who have to make life decisions in a world shaped by the East-West conflict. In his article Ways of Responding to Sorcery in a Tok Pisin Movie Drama, Paweł Kornacki analyzes a Papua New Guinean film in the Tok Pisin language from an anthropological-linguistic perspective. The author highlights the significance of the term bekim bek (“retribution”) as a key element of the Melanesian worldview and as a tool for interpreting social relations. In her article Inventing Identity in the Americas: Beauty, Appearance and the Performance of Gender, Elizabeth Gackstetter Nichols examines the strategies used to create the public image of three icons of American culture: Frida Kahlo, Evita Perón, and Carmen Miranda. The analysis shows how these three women used beauty work to create lasting and powerful images. In his article Exclusion and Empowerment in Chenta Tsai Tseng’s Arroz tres delicias, Marcin Kołakowski discusses the book by Chenta Tsai Tseng, which explores the experiences of a non-binary person within Spanish culture dominated by whiteness and heteronormativity. In his essay, the author addresses issues of discrimination, racism, and homophobia faced by non-binary individuals. The volume concludes with the article Sprachreflexive Antidiskriminierungsarbeit mit Jugendliteratur, in which Renata Behrendt analyzes the language of discrimination against non-heteronormative people in young adult literature. The author points out that reflection on discriminatory language can serve as an important tool for inclusive education in German language teaching.

The compilation of such diverse topics in one volume is by no means accidental. The articles collected in this publication present diverse methodological approaches and open up new research perspectives. The title Disciplines Beyond Boundaries should therefore be understood as an invitation to explore linguistic and cultural phenomena from a broader perspective and to engage in dialogue across and beyond disciplinary borders.
