  • Nationalisms across the Globe

    ISSN: 1662-9116

    Although in the 1980s the widely shared belief was that nationalism had become a spent force, the fragmentation of the studiously non-national Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, and Czechoslovakia in the 1990s into a multitude of successor nation-states reaffirmed its continuing significance. Today all extant polities (with the exception of the Vatican) are construed as nationstates, and hence nationalism is the sole universally accepted criterion of statehood legitimization. Similarly, human groups wishing to be recognized as fully fledged participants in international relations must define themselves as nations. This concept of world politics underscores the need for openended, broad-ranging, novel, and interdisciplinary research into nationalism and ethnicity. It promotes better understanding of the phenomena relating to social, political, and economic life, both past and present. This peer-reviewed series publishes monographs, conference proceedings, and collections of articles. It attracts well-researched, often interdisciplinary, studies which open new approaches to nationalism and ethnicity or focus on interesting case studies. The language of the series is usually English. The series is affiliated with the Institute for Transnational and Spatial History at the University of St Andrews, headed by Bernhard Struck and Tomasz Kamusella. The Institute gathers scholars with a strong interest in the comparative, entangled and transnational history of modern Europe and the globalized world.     Nobody disputes the modern relevance of Marguerite Yourcenar’s work. Back in 1981, when she was the first woman to be elected to the Académie Française, her work was received enthusiastically, rather deferentially even; there was something of an aura surrounding it with the media attention her election attracted. But this time is now past and more recent research activity has taken a new turn, with critical attention focusing on Yourcenar’s roots in her own century. The study of traditional major themes – death, the sacred, nature, history etc. – has given way to the study of more comparative, theoretical issues such as the relationship between text and images, and more incisive issues such as ecology, gender, political activism etc. And her work seems to expand accordingly, offering up a seemingly inexhaustible supply of subject matter, not only through her novels but also through her novellas, her many essays, plays, letters and so on. The primary objective of the «Yourcenar» series is to publish monographs, collected volumes, conference proceedings and volumes resulting from doctoral research which will give our intended public of academics and Yourcenar devotees a regularly updated idea of the state of the art in the field. Cross-disciplinary approaches are encouraged. The intention is to publish two volumes per year, in either English or French. The collection is directed by Francesca Counihan (Maynooth University) and Bérengère Deprez (Université catholique de Louvain). L’actualité de l’œuvre de Marguerite Yourcenar ne fait aucun doute. Passé un moment de réception enthousiaste et plutôt déférente de ses écrits, auréolés et très médiatisés par son admission comme première femme à l’Académie française en 1981, il semble que la recherche ait pris un virage vers la critique attentive de l’enracinement de l’écrivaine dans son siècle. À l’examen des grands thèmes comme la mort, le sacré, la nature, l’histoire, etc., ont succédé des questions plus comparatistes, plus théoriques telles le rapport texte/image ou plus incisives telles l’écologie, la dimension de genre, l’engagement politique, etc. Et l’œuvre répond présente : la matière semble inépuisable, non seulement les romans mais les nouvelles, les nombreux essais, le théâtre, la correspondance, etc. La collection « Yourcenar » a pour ambition de présenter à un public universitaire académique ou non, ainsi qu’aux nombreux passionnés de l’œuvre de Marguerite Yourcenar, un état des lieux régulier de la recherche, par la publication de monographies, de volumes collectifs, d’actes de colloques et d’essais issus de thèses de doctorat.     "This series deals with the relationship between literary creation and the social, political, and historical contexts in which it is produced. The types of volumes may include critical analyses of one or more works by one or several authors; critical editions of important works that may have been out of print for a long time, but which represent a major contribution to literature of the Iberian Peninsula or Latin America, English translations of important works, with critical introduction. Topics for Latin America include: studies of representative works of nineteenth- and twentieth-century thought, poetic portrayals of history, subgenres (fictionalization of the rural and urban social structures); historical novels; literature of exile; re-readings of colonial texts; new approaches to the figure of the Indian and other representatives of transculturation; women writers and other less studied authors. Topics for Spain and Portugal include: writing and nationalism in the Spanish State; bilingualism and the literary texts; censorship and exile; new and renewed genres such as autobiography and testimony; the formation of the avant-garde. Formal studies are expected to bear out the general contextual focus of the series. The use of recent developments in literary criticism is especially appropriate. The series also seeks to contribute to the understanding and accuracy of interpretation of the writing which has combined European elements with indigenous and African ones as well as to the understanding of the dynamics behind such major cultural issues as the formation of literary trends or subgenres, national identities, the effects of postcolonial status on literary imagination, the appearance and experience of women writers, and the relationships between post-modernism and Ibero-American writing. The series title is inclusive of literatures which are geographically, historically, or politically related and whose comparison is relevant to Spanish and Spanish American writing. This means those written in the other three languages of Spain, in Portugal, and Brazil. Comparative studies in which colonial or post colonial themes are prevalent may also be appropriate, if one of the literatures is in either Spanish or Portuguese. The breadth of the geographical area is intended to provide a forum for revealing and interpreting its multicultural aspects."   • Literary and Cultural Theory

    The objective of the Literary and Cultural Theory series is to publish works, collections of articles, and conference proceedings which aim at transgressing boundaries of single disciplines and at creating common space within which themes and methodologies of those single disciplines merge and contribute to the production of a novel approach to culture, literature, and philosophy. Within thus conceived area of the humanities we place particular emphasis on: first, interdisciplinarity (both in terms of topics and methodology) and, secondly, on theoretical (or theorizing) approach, i.e., an approach which not only aims at describing cultural and literary phenomena, but also at revealing their mechanisms and multiple interrelationships, visible sometimes only when boundaries of disciplines are transgressed, and when areas of overlap are identified. Those priorities do not exclude publication of volumes within what has traditionally been considered the realm of literary studies, as long as the critical and theorizing attitude is maintained.     This book series focuses on critical and post-critical research in global childhood and youth studies. It aims to trace the stimulating exchange of ideas on contemporary issues affecting children and young people around the world while exploring possibilities for local and global social change. That is, the intent is to situate and possibly deconstruct the systems of reasoning that govern human development and education, including deconstructing Euro-American critical paradigms. The series encourages innovative writing formats as well as novel theoretical and methodological approaches to co-producing knowledge in fields such as: urban, rural and indigenous childhood & youth; children's rights; alternative sexual identities; social policy, ecology and youth activism; diverse faith communities; immigration and intersectionality; mobile Internet, digital futures, and global education. It will discuss the geopolitics of knowledge, feminisms in the majority world, and decolonial and anthropological perspectives, among others. It is addressed to relevant scholars from all over the world as well as to global policy makers and employees at international organizations and NGOs interested in theoretical and methodological innovation in childhood and youth studies.

  • Histories of Religious Pluralism

    This new book series will show that a critical understanding of religious pluralism in the past is of vital significance to debates about identity, diversity, and co-existence in the present. Studies will focus on using a historical perspective to address one of three key themes in the period between 1500 and 2000 CE: intra-religious pluralism; inter-religious pluralism; or, religion, secularism, and the nation state. Within this frame of reference, constructive contrasts between a wide range of foci, approaches, and viewpoints will be keenly encouraged. The series will champion established lines of research in political, social, cultural, and gendered histories of religious pluralism – e.g. studies on liberty, persecution, and toleration – whilst also encouraging novel ways of transcending a scholarly discourse which is dominated by ideologies and methodologies derived from the social sciences – e.g. by studies on the theological and literary dimensions of conflict, cohesion, and community. The series will embrace scholarship on subjects from any part of the world. European and extra-European perspectives that complement traditional Anglo-American thinking are particularly welcome. As the ‘global turn’ continues to energize new types of enquiry, the series will also seek to advance studies of indigenous and displaced religious groups. With this scope there is a reflexive acknowledgement that the rationale for and defining concepts of the series are grounded in a ‘western’ intellectual tradition; however, this should serve as a challenge to prospective authors to pioneer new dialogues between ‘western’ and ‘non-western’ approaches and foci, or even surpass the dichotomy altogether. An emphasis will be given to promoting the best research of early career scholars from around the world, whilst also giving more established academics the opportunity to develop their multimedia policy-orientated work – e.g. podcasts, blogs, talks, press briefings, reports for thinktanks, governments, and public agencies etc. – into a book that would engage peers and students alike.   • Frontiers in Journalism Studies

    The aim of the series Frontiers in Journalism Studies is straightforward: journalism as a field, and journalism studies as a way to make sense of it, both face the challenge of keeping pace with a range of developments. Buffeted by new, mostly digital, changes in content, journalistic production, media technologies, business models, political pressures, and audience interest, not to mention still unfolding questions around algorithms, data and privacy, and platforms, the challenges for making sense of journalism are many and the changes have been significant. But changes can be made sense of, and even the most novel developments come from somewhere. Frontiers in Journalism Studies embraces an opportunity to understand journalism’s place in society anew.     Social and cultural processes are eminently historical. Historical research and historical studies, themselves embedded in historical contexts, meet this fact by reconstructing historical processes and by making offers for their analysis and interpretation. A series of new phenomena and transformations are currently challenging the exploration of education and formation and their different institutionalized forms. Among them, the process of dense globalization, increasing cultural transfers and entanglements, the scarcity of natural resources, the accelerated pace of the transformation of media environments and novel forms of individualization are some of the most pressing. These phenomena and transformations pose new questions for historical research in education. The book series "Studia Educationis Historica" offers historical studies that address these challenges with traditional and innovative historical research methods. The series offers analyses on the history of education in different countries as well as comparative and international studies. German, English, and Spanish are the languages of the book series. La historiografía, una práctica integrada en tramas históricas determinadas, responde a este fenómeno en tanto reconstruye procesos históricos y genera ofertas de análisis e interpretación de los mismos. Historizität ist eine grundlegende Dimension sozialer und kultureller Prozesse. Historiographie trägt dieser Tatsache Rechnung, indem sie selbst in bestimmte historische Kontexte eingebettet historische Prozesse rekonstruiert und verschiedene Analyse- und Deutungsangebote macht. Die Erforschung von Erziehung und Bildung und der verschiedenen Formen ihrer Institutionalisierung ist heute zugleich von Phänomenen und Prozessen einer dichten Globalisierung, verstärkter kultureller Verschränkungen und Transfers, von Ressourcenknappheit, einem beschleunigten Medienwandel und neuartigen Prozessen der Individualisierung geprägt. Sie werfen immer wieder auch neue Fragen für die bildungshistorische Forschung auf. Die Reihe "Studia Educationis Historica" präsentiert Untersuchungen, die den genannten Herausforderungen sowohl mit herkömmlichen als auch mit neueren historiographischen Mitteln begegnen. Sie umfasst Studien zur Bildungsgeschichte verschiedener Länder und auch international vergleichende Arbeiten, die jeweils in deutscher, englischer oder spanischer Sprache veröffentlicht werden.

  • Artes visuales y sociedades hispánicas

    The "Visual Arts and Hispanic Societies" series is devoted to monographic or collective works in Spanish on artistic representations of the cultures of Hispanic countries, in Spain and in the Americas as well as territories or communities on other continents. The concept of ʻvisual artsʼ includes all forms of representation related to the image, whether they refer to academic arts such as photography, painting, theatre and film, or to more recent, popular and/or heterogeneous styles such as graphic novels, television, video games, street art, installations, interventions and other forms of free or ephemeral art, whether or not linked to new technologies. This collection aims to bring together authors writing from different perspectives who are interested in the social function of current or traditional art, in the way in which visual representations seek to convey critical, pragmatic, committed and/or political points of view on the conflicts through which Hispanic societies evolved in the past or are currently being transformed. La colección "Artes visuales y sociedades hispánicas" está dedicada a trabajos monográficos o colectivos en español sobre representaciones artísticas de las culturas de los países hispánicos, tanto en España y América como en algunos territorios o comunidades de otros continentes. El concepto de ʻartes visualesʼ incluye aquí toda forma de representación relacionada con la imagen, ya se refiera a artes académicas como la fotografía, la pintura, el teatro y el cine, o a estilos más recientes, populares y/o heterogéneos como la historieta, la novela gráfica, la televisión, los videojuegos, el street art, las instalaciones y otras modalidades de arte libre o efímero, ligados o no a las nuevas tecnologías. Esta colección pretende asociar a una serie de autores de horizontes diversos interesados por la función social del arte actual o tradicional, por la manera en que las representaciones visuales pretenden transmitir puntos de vista críticos, pragmáticos, comprometidos y/o políticos sobre los conflictos a través de los cuales evolucionaron en el pasado o se transforman actualmente las sociedades hispánicas. La collection "Arts visuels et sociétés hispaniques" est consacrée à des travaux monographiques ou collectifs écrits en espagnol sur les représentations artistiques des cultures des pays hispaniques, aussi bien en Espagne et en Amérique que dans certains territoires ou communautés dʼautres continents. Le concept d'ʻart visuelʼ inclut ici toutes les formes de représentation liées à lʼimage, quʼelles se réfèrent aux arts considérés comme académiques comme la photographie, la peinture, le théâtre et le cinéma, ou à des styles plus récents, populaires et/ou hétérogènes comme la bande dessinée, le roman graphique, la télévision, les jeux vidéo, le street art, les installations et autres formes dʼart libre ou éphémère, liées ou non aux nouvelles technologies. Cette collection vise à associer des auteurs d’horizons variés qui sʼintéressent à la fonction sociale de lʼart actuel ou traditionnel, ainsi qu’à la manière dont les représentations visuelles cherchent à transmettre des points de vue critiques, pragmatiques, engagés et/ou politiques sur les conflits à travers lesquels les sociétés hispaniques ont évolué dans le passé ou sont en train de se transformer.
