This book compares ways in which children’s rights in, to, and through education, formal and informal, are viewed and implemented in a variety of social and political contexts, aiming to shed light on how policies and practices can improve equal access to high quality education in an environment which is respectful of children’s rights. Chapters focus on understanding the opportunities for and challenges of addressing children’s rights to participation and to inclusion. Authors draw from a variety of disciplines, including critical and cultural studies of childhood, and bring internationally comparative policy perspectives to share nuanced and contrasting examples of ways in which a rights-based approach to education might empower children and youth. The book deepens and complicates research on children’s education rights, and will contribute to courses in comparative education, childhood studies, education policy, and children’s rights.

Karen Alicia Ortiz Alvarado, from La Dalia, Nicaragua, is a qualified prima- ry teacher and currently Community Education Worker on CESESMA’s Safe, Quality Schools project . Martha Baiyee is a professor of early childhood education in the Department of Teacher Education at Eastern Michigan University, where she is a former Acting Director of the Center for Child and Family Program at the Institute for the Study of Children, Families and Communities (ISCFC) . In this role, Dr . Baiyee conducted research with area community agencies on preschool expulsion prevention that investigated the perspectives of both parents and providers and their experiences with intervention programs in southeast Michigan . Dr . Baiyee’s research, beyond preschool expulsions, focuses on cross cultural issues of child development, learner-centered teaching, teacher education, assessment and pro- gram evaluation . As a former early childhood educator in the US and Africa, Dr . Baiyee has a unique perspective on the daily experiences of teachers who work with young children . Natasha Blanchet-Cohen is Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Human Sciences at Concordia University, in Canada . She has worked exten- sively on children’s rights issues in Canada and abroad, including Venezuela and Colombia .
