Original scientific paper A Boom in the Figurative Language Market: The Concep- tualization of the global economic crisis in American pub- lic discourse Sanja Berberović, Nihada Delibegović Džanić Abstract: The conceptualization of economy as an abstract concept primarily relies on conceptual meta- phors. The global economic crisis has for months been the topic of the highest importance in American public discourse. In this paper, we will examine the use of creative figurative lan- guage used in relation to the economic crisis in American public discourse. The aim of this paper is to show that conventional metaphors can be creatively stretched through conceptual blending producing instances of creative figurative language which contributes to achieving different discourse goals and discourse coherence. Specifically, applying conceptual integra- tion theory, we will analyze innovative conceptual blends, motivated by conventional meta- phors. Introduction Several last decades have seen an explosion of studies examining figurative lan- guage in different types of discourse within the frameworks of conceptual meta- phor theory and blending theory.
