Explanation and Identification of Plan, Rooms and Strata (Area E)

Area E, which is located north west of the qasr el-Bālū῾, is the only area which allowed a somewhat controlled stratigraphic excavation of the house installation located to the north of Area A. As mentioned before, the heavy stone tumble mixed with debris and sand in all rooms of the respective areas excavated so far did not allow to expose clear stratigraphic layers.

It was attempted to follow a rough stratigraphy by considering the following layers:

1. Top soil is wind blown sand accumulation, debris, and stone tumble, as one strata from which pottery is presented here.

2. Floor layer: pottery is taken from above the floor or mixed or embedded in the soft floor layers as well as from below the floor. However, since the floor was laid on bedrock and the crevasses levelled with sand the sherds are not of much value in determining the possible date of the house installation, since no foundation trench was found.

Rimprofile: outcurving – squared

Exterior and interior slip reddish yellow 5YR7/6.

Core: light brown. Very fine black grits. Wheel made. Well levigated.
