Summary

Empires are of crucial relevance in today’s world, as old imperialisms are reenacted and new ones emerge. The Imperial Gothic genre, and vampires especially, are perfect tools for reading these social, cultural and political phenomena.
This book provides an interdisciplinary analysis of the imperial and imperialist tropes in twenty-first-century vampire narratives as cultural expressions of the political. The author analyses a broad corpus of imperial vampire narratives from Britain, France, Poland, Russia and the USA, including global empires, ‘secondary empires’, and local/small nation imperialisms; ‘democratic’ empires and authoritarian ones; Western empires and not (fully) Western ones. It includes retrotopic imperial nostalgias, present performances and imperial future visions, as well as the analysis of potentially anti-imperial and anti-imperialist narratives.
