Summary

The manifold value of dated manuscripts is clear to everyone studying medieval literacy. They contribute to the history of scripts and thus help dating undated manuscripts, they provide evidence of scribes, artists, and other book artisans, and shed light on the circumstances of the production of individual manuscripts. Although precedents can be found as early as the beginning of modern palaeography (Bernard de Montfaucon, Palaeographia graeca, Paris, 1708, pp. i–iii, and 37–108), a systematic cataloguing of this type of manuscripts began late, in the 1950s as regards the manuscripts in Latin scripts (cf.
