  • Natur, Wissenschaft und die Künste / Nature, Science and the Arts / Nature, Science et les Arts

    Nature, Science and the Arts is an international scholarly series dealing with the history of cultural interplay between arts, humanities, natural sciences and technology, both on the level of theoretical reflection and in artistic enunciations. It is not restricted to any particular epoch, society, medium or region. By publishing contributions to this new interdisciplinary research area, the series illuminates the traditional connection between two ways of interpreting the world, a connection that has been largely marginalized since Wilhelm Dilthey’s strict dissociation between humanities and natural sciences. Nature, Science et les Arts est une collection scientifique internationale qui explore l’histoire des interactions entre la culture des sciences humaines et artistiques et celle des sciences naturelles et techniques, au niveau de la réflexion théorique et de l’articulation artistique. Elle s’intéresse pour cela à toutes les époques, formes de sociétés, médias et régions. La collection présente des études sur ces nouveaux domaines de recherche et illustre le lien traditionnel entre deux perceptions du monde qui ont été très largement marginalisées depuis la stricte séparation opérée par Wilhem Diltheys entre les sciences humaines et naturelles. Natur, Wissenschaft und die Künste ist eine internationale Wissenschaftsreihe, welche die Geschichte des Zusammenwirkens geisteswissenschaftlich-künstlerischer und naturwissenschaftlich-technischer Kultur auf der Ebene theoretischer Reflektion und künstlerischer Artikulation untersucht. Dabei gibt es keine Beschränkungen auf bestimmte Epochen, Gesellschaftsformen, Medien oder Regionen. Die Reihe stellt Untersuchungen aus diesem neuen wissenschaftlichen Forschungsgebiet vor und veranschaulicht den traditionellen Zusammenhang zweier Formen der Weltdeutung, welcher seit Wilhelm Diltheys strenger Trennung von Geistes- und Naturwissenschaften weitestgehend marginalisiert wurde.

    Art Knowledge Theory is a book series that explores artistic modes of expression as forms of knowledge production. It focuses on transdisciplinary, epistemological and methodological approaches to contemporary art. Linking artistic and scientific practices, tools, techniques and theories, the volumes investigate the cultures of aesthetics and science studies as they relate to works of art. Art Knowledge Theory analyzes the role of art in contemporary culture by probing the philosophical, historical and social parameters by which images are accessed and assessed. As an amplification - as well as intervention or even a correction to historical research, this series questions the state of the art and knowledge within a culture, characterized by technology and science.

  • MIMOS – Schweizer Jahrbuch Darstellende Künste

    The MIMOS series addresses professionals in the field of the performing arts and an interested general public. The richly illustrated volumes contain contributions from specialists and artists in German, French, Italian and English. Since 2021, the Swiss Performing Arts Yearbook MIMOS documented the work of the respective winners of the Swiss Grand Award for the Performing Arts / Hans Reinhart Ring. This award, the highest in Switzerland, honours outstanding artists in the field of performing arts. The award is provided by the Swiss Federal Office of Culture (FOC) in cooperation with the Swiss Association for Theatre Studies (SATS). Laureates may be individuals or institution from dance, theatre, cabaret, performance, contemporary circus, puppet theatre or street art. Until 2020, the series was called MIMOS – Swiss Theatre Yearbook. From 2011 to 2013, each MIMOS edition was dedicated to the artist who the SATS awarded with the Hans Reinhart Ring. From 2014 to 2020, the main focus of the MIMOS Theatre Yearbook was placed on the winner of the Swiss Grand Award for Theatre / Hans Reinhart Ring, awarded by the FOC in cooperation with the SATS. In 2017, a special MIMOS edition was published to mark the triple anniversary: 90 years of the SATS, 60 years of the Hans Reinhart Ring and 25 years of the Institute of Theatre Studies at the University of Bern. Réalisés par des expertes et artistes du domaine des arts de la scène et richement illustrés, les volumes de la collection MIMOS s’adressent autant aux professionnelles, qu’à un public plus large. Les contributions sont rédigées en allemand, français, italien ainsi qu’en anglais. Depuis 2021, chaque ouvrage de l’Annuaire suisse des arts de la scène MIMOS est consacré au parcours artistique de la personnalité honorée par l’Office fédéral de la culture (OFC), en coopération avec la Société suisse du théâtre (SST), du Grand Prix suisse des arts de la scène / Anneau Hans Reinhart. Il s’agit de la plus haute distinction suisse décernée une fois par an à une ou un artiste ou institution issues de la danse, du théâtre, du cabaret, de la performance, du cirque contemporain, du théâtre de marionnettes ou des arts de la rue. Entre 2011 et 2013, sous le nom de MIMOS – Annuaire suisse du théâtre, les ouvrages de la collection étaient entièrement consacrés à la lauréate ou au lauréat de l’Anneau Hans Reinhart, attribué par la SST. Seit 2021 dokumentiert das Schweizer Jahrbuch Darstellende Künste MIMOS das Wirken der Trägerin bzw. des Trägers des Schweizer Grand Prix Darstellende Künste / Hans-Reinhart-Rings. Mit dieser höchsten Auszeichnung im Bereich der darstellenden Künste ehrt das Bundesamt für Kultur (BAK) in Kooperation mit der Schweizerischen Gesellschaft für Theaterkultur (SGTK) jedes Jahr eine herausragende Persönlichkeit oder Institution aus Tanz, Theater, Kleinkunst, Performance, zeitgenössischer Zirkus, Figurentheater oder Strassenkunst.     «Comparatism and Society» is an interdisciplinary collection which considers literature, the arts and the humanities in a close interaction with the evolution of society and the history of ideas. Although open to a wide range of methodologies, it nevertheless favours the perspective of cross-analysis, convinced that the objective of all research should be to reach beyond the limits of linguistic, national and disciplinary borders. Comparatism and Society aims to increase contacts between university researchers and those interested in sharing results and disseminating them to a wider audience. « Comparatisme et Société » est une collection interdisciplinaire qui envisage la littérature, les arts et les sciences humaines dans une interaction étroite avec l’évolution de la société et de l’histoire des idées.     This series of art historical studies concentrates on the periods from the Renaissance to Modernism. Topics classified under Contemporary Artwill only be included only in exceptional cases. Papers on Art are primarily aiming at the monographic investigation of sculpture, painting, graphic art, and arts and crafts, comprehensive studies will be incorporated on a case-by-case basis. The term monographic is used broadly, comprising monographs dealing with the œuvre of one artist, treatises considering partial aspects, as well as studies of a particular work. Diese Reihe kunsthistorischer Studien ist zwischen Renaissance und Moderne angesiedelt, die Kunst der Gegenwart sollte indes nur ausnahmsweise berücksichtigt werden. Primär steht diese Reihe für monographische Untersuchungen zu den Themenbereichen der Bildenden Künste (also Skulptur, Malerei, Graphik, Kunsthandwerk) offen, im Einzelfall können auch übergreifende Darstellungen aufgenommen werden. Zudem wird der Begriff monographisch bewusst weit gefasst: So kann es sich sowohl um Studien zum Gesamtœuvre eines Künstlers als auch zu Teilaspekten desselben handeln, desgleichen um Monographien zum einzelnen Werk.

  • Theaomai – Studien zu den performativen Künsten

    The Old Greek verb theaomai – looking both with the mind’s eye and the actual eye – since the very beginning of European theatre suggests a close relation between theatre and theory. Within the act of perception the spectators, theates, relate the things they hear and see to the site of their memory and psyche. Of all the arts those who reflect the process of perception in the aesthetic form itself are performative arts. This series publishes interdisciplinary studies between theatre- and media studies as well as studies on the visual arts that analyse the social and subjective potential of the aesthetic process of looking, hearing, and reading. Das altgriechische Verb theaomai – «mit dem geistigen wie konkreten Auge schauen» – legt seit den Anfängen des europäischen Theaters eine enge Beziehung von Theater und Theorie nahe. Diese wird vom Zuschauer theates über den Akt seiner Wahrnehmung geknüpft: er verbindet konkretes Hören und Sehen mit dem Schauplatz seines Gedächtnisses und seiner Psyche. Künste, die diesen Prozess des Wahrnehmens in der ästhetischen Form selbst reflektieren, somit Denken und sinnliche Teilnahme des Rezipienten fordern, um die Sinnpotentialitäten des ästhetischen Gegenstands zu realisieren, sind performative Künste.     The series on Austrian Culture provides critical evaluations, in English or German, of Austrian authors, artists, works, currents, or figures from the Middle Ages to the present. Austria is defined as those parts of the old Habsburg empire that produced notable writings in the German language, including Czechoslovakia (Prague) and the Bukovina (Czernowitz). The series offers a forum for the exploration of the multifarious relationships between literature and other aspects of Austrian culture, such as philosophy, music, art, architecture, and the theater.     "EUROSINICA is a book series for monographs of various thematic focuses, sharing the goal of studying culture and literature in contemporary or historical contexts. The series, under the imprint of Peter Lang, was founded in 1984 by the German sinologist Günther Debon (1921–2005) and the Canadian comparatist Adrian Hsia (1938–2010); so far, thirteen books have been published. While the founding editors placed the emphasis on the transfer processes of classical literary works and motifs between cultures, the continuation of their work requires new approaches. Rather than operate within the conceptual framework of “cultural dialogue” between an East and a West viewed as distinct entities, the series editors tend to a view of cultures in contact. EUROSINICA is accordingly open for studies and interpretation of authors, personalities, genres and individual works committed to an understanding of humanity as a common source of values which, rather than be impeded by cultural, linguistic or ethnic disparity, are being reshaped and reinvented in different settings. From the basic concept the series’ founders have contributed, we will carry on the approach to literature, the arts and history as transnational narratives emerging out of distinct contextualization and relying on as well as contributing to both the European and the Sinic cultural spheres. We explicitly welcome well-argued innovative interpretations of classical works, as we do historical and translation studies. At a time of ongoing global changes of aesthetic and critical paradigms, EUROSINICA does not intend to propose the East-West-paradigm as a last refuge for intellectual cultural conservatism, but rather envisages new critical approaches to the sporadic process of aesthetic and historical interactions (“contacts”) between formerly allegedly “separated” cultural spheres. For Authors EUROSINICA expects to publish between one and two volumes annually and aims for a balance between studies of contemporary or ancient focus. It thereby seeks to counter the trend of separating research on classical and modern issues. EUROSINICA will consider manuscripts in European languages. The series editors and board members are scholars at universities in the Baltic and Nordic countries of Europe, as well as in mainland China, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao.     The aim of the series Worlds of East Asia of the Swiss Asia Society is to publish high-quality, representative work issuing from academic research on all aspects of East Asia. Furthermore the series intends to present studies that offer expert knowledge on relevant themes and current questions appealing not only to the academic public, but also to an audience generally interested in East Asia. However, the series is also committed to the rich variety of studies and writing on East Asia in the international research community. The main publication languages for studies, collections (by individual or several contributors), and surveys are therefore German, French, and English. The series is supervised and internally reviewed by an editorial board comprising leading representatives in East Asian studies.     Studies in Modern German and Austrian Literature is a broadly conceived series that aims to publish significant research and scholarship devoted to German and Austrian literature of all forms and genres from the eighteenth century to the present day. The series promotes the analysis of intersections of literature with thought, society and other art forms, such as film, theatre, autobiography, music, painting, sculpture and performance art. It includes monographs on single authors or works, focused historical periods, and studies of experimentation with form and genre. Wider ranging explorations of literary, cultural or socio-political phenomena in the German-speaking lands or among writers in exile and analyses of national, ethnic and cultural identities in literature are also welcome topics. Proposals are invited for monographs, high-quality doctoral dissertations revised for book publication, focused collections of essays (including selectively edited conference proceedings), annotated editions and bibliographies. Senior figures in the academic profession as well as early career or independent scholars are encouraged to submit proposals. All proposals and manuscripts will be peer reviewed. We publish in both German and English. This series is a successor to Studies in Modern German Literature, edited by Peter D.G. Brown.

    Interlocutrices privilégiées tant des acteurs sociaux que des autres sciences sociales, les sciences de l'éducation alimentent le questionnement éducatif des sociétés contemporaines. La Collection Exploration entend contribuer à cette réflexion. La pluralité des disciplines et des approches en sciences de l'éducation définit la vocation de la Collection Exploration, celle de carrefour des multiples dimensions de la recherche et de l'action éducative. Sans a priori quant aux méthodes, la Collection publie des travaux empruntant une démarche scientifique, afin de les rendre accessibles aux chercheurs, aux formateurs, enseignants et éducateurs, et plus généralement à toute personne intéressée par l'analyse des phénomènes éducatifs. Comme l'évoque son nom, Exploration privilégie les travaux investissant des terrains nouveaux, abordant des questions vives de la recherche éducationnelle ou développant des méthodologies et des problématiques prometteuses. Exploration comprend trois séries. Recherches en sciences de l’éducation couvre tous les domaines de l’éducation ; Éducation: Histoire et pensée est dédiée aux travaux sociohistoriques et de philosophie ; Vygotskij : œuvres et études se spécialise dans le développement, l’art et les concepts y relatifs en éducation. Placée sous les auspices de la Société suisse pour la recherche en éducation, Exploration a été fondée en 1977; elle a depuis lors publié une centaine d'ouvrages. Quatre à huit volumes paraissent annuellement, choisis par les directeurs de la collection et évalués par des chercheurs scientifiques reconnus.   • Cultural History and Literary Imagination

    This series promotes critical inquiry into the relationship between the literary imagination and its cultural, intellectual or political contexts. The series encourages the investigation of the role of the literary imagination in cultural history and the interpretation of cultural history through literature, visual culture and the performing arts. Contributions of a comparative or interdisciplinary nature are particularly welcome. Individual volumes might, for example, be concerned with any of the following: The mediation of cultural and historical memory, The material conditions of particular cultural manifestations, The construction of cultural and political meaning, Intellectual culture and the impact of scientific thought, The methodology of cultural inquiry, Intermediality, Intercultural relations and practices. Acceptance is subject to advice from our editorial board, and all proposals and manuscripts undergo a rigorous peer review assessment prior to publication. The usual language of publication is English, but proposals in French, German, Italian and Spanish may also be considered.
