A Critical Introduction to Media and Communication Theory

The study of the media has led scholars to apply a humbling array of theories in their efforts to analyze messages, media systems, audiences and media themselves. One of the strengths of media studies has been its flexibility as it incorporates humanist and social scientific ideas in our work. This series is focused on theories, methods, schools of thought, domains of intellectual struggle, and individual thinkers whose importance to the study of the media can be reconfigured, reinvented, and refocused. Each of the specially commissioned books in the series shares a concern for the heritage of thought in the field of communication. These books provide sophisticated discussions of the relevance of particular theorists or theories, with an emphasis on reinventing communication and media studies, whether by incorporating ideas thought by some to be 'outside' the field, or by providing fresh analyses of ideas that have long been considered central to media studies. "This series encourages works of scholarship that explore the artistic and theological depths of biblical symbols. "Symbol" here means any well-known reality that is used to illuminate a more mysterious reality by means of the analogy between the two. The symbols can be objects, qualities, actions, roles, events, stories, or systems. "Exploring" symbols entails: painting a full picture of the well-known reality as the original writers and readers would have known it; establishing what the subject of the symbol was in particular instances; and seeing through the symbol to the depths of the subject. The books in this series may focus on a particular symbol (e.g. light, or shepherd, or the Exodus), on a particular type of symbolism (e.g. Paul's legal symbolism, or Flosea's personal symbolism), or on particular themes (e.g. the variety of symbols used to illuminate the mystery of human sinfulness and how those symbols are used to interpret each other). Still others may focus on particular books, such as Ezekiel or Revelation, exploring their main symbols. "

Ecological Pedagogy, Curriculum and Scholarship

This book series is premised on the ecological understanding that all of education– all of the living fields of knowledge entrusted to teachers and students in schools, all of the gestures of teaching and learning itself – is full of relations, interdependencies, ancestries, places, voices animated by lived and learned experiences. Ecological pedagogy, curriculum and scholarship understands that all living fields of knowledge must be taught and learned as such, with all of their intrinsic and animate rigours, complexities, interrelatedness, and earthly responsibilities. In these ecologically sorrowful times, our individual and collective impulse to raise voices of commiseration and encouragement to those working inside and outside of schools bristles with urgency. And this just at a time when the world also seems to be churning with increasing distractions and fakeries whose beneficiaries are not of this earth. Schools and schooling are caught up in ongoing yet ever-shifting inheritances of place and displacement, privilege, colonialism, gender and so on. They are also subject to legacies of indiscriminate standardization, efficiency, fragmentation and all of the ramped-up, exhausting and exhausted distractions of our current age. Education often drags along with its tenacious legacies of thinking and practice that are mostly silent, often silencing, simply taken for granted as just the way things are. Schooling itself, in so many quarters, has become an ecological disaster. Many teachers have studied and voiced these matters, while pursuing more venturous, ecologically sound work in their classroom, all this in deliberate resistance to the marginalization of such work. The series invites scholarly, enlivening and healing ways of researching and writing that attempt to live up to the ecologies of the topics themselves, each in their own ways and languages, each laden with their own ancestries, troubles, and insights – eco-hermeneutics, interpretive research, poetic inquiry, autobiographical and life writing, currere, Indigenous research, arts-based inquiry, storytelling and emergent ways and means of knowing. None of these are merely methodologies. Each involves myriad encounters, myriad relationships, myriad possibilities. In trying to find the measure of what is written within the things written about, these ways are in themselves ecological and pedagogical. They are locales where our relations are worked out, our songs are sung, our silences are shared, and our individual and collective stories are lived, contested, shaped and re-told. The logo for this book series is a Celtic Knot drawn by Eric Jardine in 1992. It became the cover illustration of a self-published book that year. It is a reminder of how long-standing is this current stream of work in education, stretching far back from there. These stretches are part of the ecological imagination itself. Rather, the richness of the Church History series is in its scope, which variously mixes historical theology and historical hermeneutics, doctrine and practices of piety, religious or spiritual movements, and institutional configurations. Die Reihe „Berufliche Bildung in Forschung, Schule und Arbeitswelt“ hat den Anspruch, in erster Linie Beiträge zu publizieren, die sich mit Forschungsschwerpunkten zur beruflichen Bildung, zur Arbeitswelt und den beruflichen Schulen auseinandersetzen. Diese drei Schwerpunkte sind Gegenstand vielfältiger Untersuchungen, die von einer genauen Betrachtung der Arbeitswelt mittels Arbeitsprozessanalysen bis zur Auseinandersetzung mit Fragen einer erfolgreichen Gestaltung von Lernen und Lehren reichen. Forschungsergebnisse, die zu diesem Spannungsfeld beitragen, haben erste Priorität in der Reihe und werden von Wissenschaftlern eingebracht, die schon viele Jahre in deren Gebieten arbeiten. Georges Pompidou – Archives

The «Georges Pompidou Archives» Series publishes thematic volumes aiming at retracing George Pompidou’’s most telling actions. The documents presented are mostly extracted from the archives of the French Presidency of the Republic. They consist of accounts of interviews, collaborators’’ notes, letters, newspaper articles… These publications first run from 1962 to 1968, years during which Pompidou was Général de Gaulle’’s Prime Minister, and then focus on the 1969–1974 period, when George Pompidou himself became President. Each volume of this series, which offers original analysis of each document used, is achieved by a scholar and research associate of the Georges Pompidou Association. The National archives and the Georges Pompidou Association, through its scientific board, are in charge of this series. Also have a look at the series «Georges Pompidou – Études». La série « Archives » de la collection « Georges Pompidou » est consacrée à la publication de volumes thématiques représentatifs de l’’action de Georges Pompidou. Les documents sont essentiellement issus des archives de la présidence de la République. Ils se composent de comptes rendus d’entretiens, de notes de collaborateurs, de correspondances, d’interventions dans la presse, etc. Pour l’essentiel, ces publications couvrent la période 1962–1968, où Georges Pompidou fut le Premier ministre du général de Gaulle, et la période 1969–1974, durant laquelle Georges Pompidou fut président de la République française. Chaque volume est mis en œuvre par un universitaire et un chargé de recherches de l’association Georges Pompidou, qui proposent des analyses inédites de chacun de ces documents. La série est placée sous le patronage conjoint de l’association Georges Pompidou, par l’intermédiaire de son conseil scientifique, et des Archives nationales.
